Recreation!

Take a look at some of the paintings that have been recreated to the left...

Then click on this link... Museum of Modern Art and search around for an artwork you think you could recreate. Get a parent or sibling to help you use objects or people from around the house, and do your best to re create the artwork! Have fun with it! Make it funny if you want, or be totally serious. It's up to you!

(hint, if you're stuck, look at landscapes)

Ok, so Now that you are finished fill out the google form and post your work to the padlet below.

April 19-30

Found object color wheel

To the left is an example of a color wheel. Your mission is to find objects around your house that match or come close to the colors you see, and arrange them into a circle sorted by color! (hint! baby toys are often brightly colored)

Here are some examples of what other kids have done

April 12-16

Spring flowers

This is a cool video that I found using pencil, marker, and something to color with (markers or crayons, or whatever you have at home.

Once you finish your artwork, snap a pic, post it on the padlet

March 8-12

PRinciples of design review

So, we've gone through almost ALL of the principles of design. Some have been combined with one or more others, but we've touched on them.

Balance is the distribution of the visual weight of objects, colors, texture, and space. If the design was a scale, these elements should be balanced to make a design feel stable. In symmetrical balance, the elements used on one side of the design are similar to those on the other side; in asymmetrical balance, the sides are different but still look balanced. In radial balance, the elements are arranged around a central point and may be similar.

Emphasis is the part of the design that catches the viewer’s attention. Usually the artist will make one area stand out by contrasting it with other areas. The area could be different in size, color, texture, shape, etc.

Movement is the path the viewer’s eye takes through the work of art, often to focal areas. Such movement can be directed along lines, edges, shape, and color within the work of art.

Pattern is the repeating of an object or symbol all over the work of art.

Repetition works with pattern to make the work of art seem active. The repetition of elements of design creates unity within the work of art.

Proportion is the feeling of unity created when all parts (sizes, amounts, or number) relate well with each other. When drawing the human figure, proportion can refer to the size of the head compared to the rest of the body.

Rhythm is created when one or more elements of design are used repeatedly to create a feeling of organized movement. Rhythm creates a mood like music or dancing. To keep rhythm exciting and active, variety is essential.

Variety is the use of several elements of design to hold the viewer’s attention and to guide the viewer’s eye through and around the work of art.

Unity is the feeling of harmony between all parts of the work of art, which creates a sense of completeness.

Watch the video and take the google quiz below. (no padlet this week)

Feb 22-26

Unity

Unity (also called harmony) is an important principle of design that gives the artwork a sense of cohesion or coherence. It is the wholeness or completeness of a picture. Unity and harmony in art are used by artists to tie a composition together and help the composition make sense as a whole piece of art.
Start by watching the top video. It'll give you a good idea what Unity really looks like.
Then grab some art supplies, and do the project in the bottom video! It's a great way to dip your toes into the principle of unity!
And of course, as always, click on the google form, fill it out completely, and then submit your artwork on Padlet!

Feb 17-19

Rhythm

We've covered repetition, but this is a little different, and it's important to know that difference. There are two videos for you to watch this week, just to get the idea of what rhythm is vs repetition. The first one does a good job explaining the difference. The second video doesn't have any talking, so you need to read the captions, and listen to the music to get the full idea. Enjoy!

Next your third video is a project for you to do! You'll need markers, and blank paper. (maybe some colored pencils if you have them)

Don't forget to fill out the google form, and post your work on this week's Padlet!

February 8-12

MOvement

There are still a few principles of design we need to touch on. This weeks is MOVEMENT. Watch the video to the left to learn what movement in art is, what it looks like, and how to create it! Don't forget to take fill out the google form! Then watch the second video on the left, and do the project just as shown  (obviously, you don't have to do a butterfly, and any shape will work, but you can if you want to!)

YOU HAVE ALL WEEK TO DO THIS, don't rush! Put some effort into this to make it look clean and nice.  THEN post on the padlet below.

Feb 1-5

Repetition and Variety

Ok! Almost done! We've got a few more principles of design to cover. This week, we are hitting Repetition and Variety. Use headphones if you got em! This video is a little intense to start with. Enjoy!

Next watch the Mr. Mapson video and carefully think about how you are going to create an artwork that contains repetition and/or variety. Then fill out the google form.

NOTE: in building students do NOT need to post to the Padlet, ONLINE students DO.

Jan 25-29 (Including Tuesday Jan 26 e-learning day)

Emphasis

Remember when I said we would continue last weeks project this week? Well, it turns out that we are going to be shifting gears and not continuing that project.

Lets work on some of the Elements of Art and Principles of Design that we haven't gotten to yet!

Watch the video on EMPHASIS to the left.

I want you to do TWO small drawings for me. One were you emphasize something like maybe your pet, or a family member. The second one I want you to show the same thing, without any emphasis. For example, look at the pictures I posted to the left. One has a LOT of emphasis on Waldo. The second image has no emphasis. In fact Where's Waldo is ALL about removing any emphasis on Waldo. It makes it harder to find him!

Today, I want you to make TWO drawings! One that takes something and put emphasis on it, and another that takes it away! Post them on the padlet and take your google quiz!

Emphasis! Look how he's the only thing in this image!

No emphasis. Look how he is just about the same as everyone else.

Jan 19-22

THe Civil RIghts movement and the art of protest

I know that you have studied the American Civil Rights movement before in class, or you will soon. Some of you may not remember very well. Watch Tim and Moby from Brainpop help remind you what it was all about.

Then fill out the google form below! We'll continue this project next week.

Dirty Face

BY SHEL SILVERSTEIN

Where did you get such a dirty face,

My darling dirty-faced child?

I got it from crawling along in the dirt

And biting two buttons off Jeremy’s shirt.

I got it from chewing the roots of a rose

And digging for clams in the yard with my nose.

I got it from peeking into a dark cave

And painting myself like a Navajo brave.

I got it from playing with coal in the bin

And signing my name in cement with my chin.

I got it from rolling around on the rug

And giving the horrible dog a big hug.

I got it from finding a lost silver mine

And eating sweet blackberries right off the vine.

I got it from ice cream and wrestling and tears

And from having more fun than you’ve had in years.

Illustration

Illustration is far more important than people think!

When you combine words with illustrations, whether it's a drawing or an actual picture, the reader can gain a better understanding of the topic. ... Pictures also enable the reader to explore the world within their imagination and make connections between what they have just read and a visual image.Your job today is to read the text to the left, and illustrate the poem. Then of course fill out the google form and post your artwork on the Padlet. Make sure you are putting some effort into your drawings! I may be asking kids to go back and do it again!

January 7 2021

Welcome back!

We have one day of class this week! Come check in and tell me how your break was!

Live chats

I'll be LIVE on Tuesday and Thursday at 2pm for a quick art lesson. Bring paper and pencil.

December 7-11

Pattern Stockings

This is a fun little project that has a lot of potential for fun! Watch the first video to the left and get started! You'll need a nice paper (no lines please) a Pencil, eraser, sharpie (optional) and something to color with. I like markers for this project, but crayons will do.

DON'T COLOR!

Until you watch the second video! I made this one to show you how to put patterns in your drawing.

an extra fun thing

Hey! So Ms. Knighten needs some drawings to display during the holiday music performance! Grab some paper, a pencil and something to color with, and watch these videos! Post your work on this weeks Padlet!

November 30 -December 4

Pattern and Repetition

So patterns and repetitiion often go together. You all know patterns in the ABAB format, or the ABCABC format. Pretty easy right? Most of you learned that in Kindergarten. Next, lets take what we know and see how far we can take it.

Take a look at the first video, then fill out the google form from the icon below. Next, grab a paper, a ruler, a pencil, and something to color with, and watch the video Mr. Mapson made for you! Click on the Padlet icon to upload your pattern work!

November 16-20

Proportion

So, the use of proportion or "scale" is used WAY more than you think! You've probably done it without even knowing what to call it.

For instance, when an object is far away it looks smaller right? Closer up it looks much bigger. That's scale!

Take a look at the bobble head pic to the left. Elvis' head looks HUGE right? Way out of proportion to his body! Making parts of an object different sizes in relation to other parts of it plays with proportion. Watch the video on top to see a good explanation of Proportion and scale in art. Then click on the google forms icon to fill out the g-form.

Next, watch the video just below Elvis to see how to apply proportion in your artwork, do your project and click the Padlet icon below to drop it on this weeks page!

November 9-13

Balance

So, we've gone through all of the elements of art, now we are starting the principals of design. These go hand in hand with the elements of art. The principals of design describe HOW an artist uses the elements of art in a piece of artwork. Now that we've been introduced to Line, Shape, Color, Texture, Value, Form, and Space, we should have an idea about how to put them together. Watch the video to the right and get an idea about how to use Balance in your artwork. (you don't need to do the activity in her video, mine is easier) Then, grab a paper, some glue, scissors, and a magazine, and let's get to work!

Day of the dead

Day of the dead was on Sunday  this week. Many people confuse this holiday with Halloween because of the use of skulls and imagery of dead people. However, that's not the case! In fact the use of skulls isn't supposed to be scary at all! It's supposed to be celebratory! Take a look at the video to the left. Tim and Moby explain it pretty well. Then watch the second video to see a cool lesson on drawing Sugar Skulls. As always, fill out the google form, and then drop a pic of your work on the Padlet.

Origami Butterflies

You'll need some square paper. Watch the video to the left and give it your best shot! Decorate your butterflies! Make as many as you like! Maybe make a background? When you are done, fill out the google form below and snap a pic and post it on the Padlet...
