College in the Schools program (CITS) students & families will receive a letter from the University of Minnesota asking for a social security number (Form W-9S) to support the tax documents that will be prepared in January 2022. CITS and PSEO students are exempt. All tuition and fee payments are provided by the ISD school district (CITS) or the State of Minnesota (PSEO). Ignore this letter. There is no tax implication for CITS enrollment for which a 1098-T form is required.
While a student is in high school and enrolled in early college coursework directly through either the CITS or PSEO programs, including homeschooling PSEO participation, students and families may ignore the 1098-T communication(s). Exception: In the situation(s) where high school or junior high students are taking classes as guest students and personally paying full tuition and fees, they will need to comply with the U of MN request for information.
For more information, please visit the UMN Tax Management Office's FAQ regarding educational tax benefits.
