Spring 2022 University Communication
A MyU interruptive message will be going up tomorrow (Friday January 7) at 10 a.m. for all new/transfer students for all campuses in regards to paying tuition and fees in the case modalities may change. There are 683 students total. The text, included below, is the same as it was for fall 2021. After this term, we (U of M System plan to include this in the eBusiness agreement students receive
Although the University is hopeful that the COVID-19 pandemic will soon be behind us, we want to be clear that, in the unlikely event that unexpected changes in modalities of instruction become necessary, tuition and fees are charged based on the opportunity to earn academic credit, not based on the mode of instruction. The mode of course delivery might change during the semester if circumstances require. If you complete your courses with a passing grade, you will earn appropriate academic credit.
Click confirm to acknowledge receiving this information and to continue into MyU. Thank you.

There is a single row for each class section.
If the class has multiple instructors, the instructors will need to coordinate the official response. There can only be one response per class section.
There are classes listed that are active but do not yet have an instructor assigned. Department Heads - please update the class if necessary. Work with your CCS scheduler to officially add the instructor name and workload/contact minutes in PeopleSoft as soon as possible.
Any other class changes (additions, cancels, capacity changes, etc) please continue to work with your Associate Dean to have those changes communicated to the Office of the Registrar.
Q: What if I already notified Registrar Carla Boyd or the registrar staff via UMDREG@d.umn.edu?
A: Update this roster with your decision.
Q: When will students see these changes?
A: The Office of the Registrar has requested system wide assistance for batch updating the schedule of classes. Depending upon resources, changes submitted before the deadline we hope to have updated by 9PM tomorrow evening. Otherwise the updates may occur first thing Monday morning.

UMD Schedule of Classes changes for fall 2020
At the direction of the UMD Deans and Associate Deans from all 7 academic units (CEHSP, CLA, LSBE, SCSE, MED, PHAR, UST) changes are happening to the Schedule of Classes.
What: There are 4 delivery methods that result in 6 UMD delivery options students will know before the start of the class.
1) Some classes are being cancelled, other classes are changing their method of delivery and/or class meetings, and other classes will be changing UMD rooms.
2) Every UMD class is getting a Class Attribute, Facility ID, and Class Note to help student's ability to search for, see, and understand any changes in how the class will be delivered.
When: July 14-31, 2020
Where is the official "source of truth": The UMD Schedule of Classes is the "source of truth" with current information.

What else may you need to know to help UMD students?
Helping UMD students find classes on other campuses? Crookston, Morris, Rochester and Twin Cities campuses have updated their Class Schedules differently from each other and UMD.
21 July 2020
as of 7/20/2020 All UMD class data received to be reconfirmed or rescheduled for instruction mode, location and methods of delivery.
MED and PHAR classes have been validated and a class note has been added to all class sections to indicate method of delivery.
as of 7/21/2020 CEHSP, CLA, LSBE, SCSE, data is being analyzed and some updates have begun. Yes you can see the changes in Class Search, look for Class Notes.
VIP for faculty: Do not get ahead of the Chancellor's communication to students, Deans will share when you can directly communicate.
In preparation, how should we communicate class meeting details?
Communicating by email - Awesome! Not sure how to find your students emails. Link to UMD How-To-Guide
Communicating using your class Canvas site - Even Better! Copy/paste your email(s) of what you are telling students into the class Canvas site. Our Ed Tech ITSS friends can help you do this. A UMD goal is to have a SINGLE place students know they can receive the information and access it over and over without it "lost" in email.
FYI: Every class note tells students the following :
"After registration, visit the class in Canvas. Instructor(s) will provide more information as it becomes available. Make registration changes before the start of class."
Next Steps:
Monday July 27 in the evening, OTR will run 2 major jobs to update the bulk of our UMD Schedule of Classes course delivery information. Tuesday is when students may start calling if they are watching their schedules.
Not a student? Use Class Search or Schedule Builder to see the updated and new information (Instruction Mode, Location, Class Attribute, Class Note and Facility Id)
Room assignment(s) if changes were requested or needed, MAY NOT be final until later (early August is the goal).
Friday, July 31 / August 1 Registration for fall (add/drops/swaps) will become available to all again.
(*Updated 7/24) updated change will be viewable in production 7/25/00 ) August 3 - MyU modifications to improve student's experience in using Class Attributes, Class Notes and Facility ID goes to production
August - OTR will keep working room requests and changes in the order in which they are received. All changes must come from the Associate Dean until further notice.

6 key points to understand "Grades" & "Grade Basis"
UMD all classes will be following the University Grading & Transcript policy. Key difference: "C- = S " (Satisfactory) See sections 2, 3, 3C.1-3 https://policy.umn.edu/education/gradingtranscripts
Every U of MN class is assigned a "Grade Basis." This is what determines what type of grades are available in the drop down list that may officially be assigned to a student (e.g. A-F, S-N only, A-F, X & K , Audit, Student Option (A-F,Audit, or S-N combination, or Non-Graded, etc.)
The "Student Option" allows each student to determine class-by-class if they are going to change to the "S-N only" option or NOT.
Here is how it works for entering final grades: Faculty enter, approve & submit the earned grade according to the syllabus grading for the class via
CANVAS and push to MyU final grade roster or
MyU Faculty Center Grade Roster (as normal) upload from a spreadsheet (as normal) or
Direct data entry into MyU Faculty Center, Grade Roster.
After which the PeopleSoft System (not you) automatically converts A-F grades to S-N grades depending upon if the student took action and made a change to their grading basis.
Faculty can see the student's decision
On the MyU Faculty Center > Class Roster
On the official MyU Faculty Center > Grade Roster. *Grade Rosters are not yet available for most spring classes*
A student's decision to change to S-N is not to have any affect on the grade faculty report as earned.
Section 1: Instruction Guidance
Addresses common instructor questions for Spring, Summer and Fall 2020 terms and classes that may be different from business-as-usual.
28 April 2020 Information as of:
Q: Spring 2020: How will students officially change to S-N grading option for one or more spring classes?
A. Registration Shopping Cart. Go to MyU > Shopping Cart > spring 2020 > select class.
In the upper right corner there is a "select box." Drop down, select S-N only and SAVE.
Q: What are the key dates that I as a faculty or instructor need to know and communicate?
A. Email from Registrar Carla Boyd on April 29
Students will not be academically suspended (dismissed) for GPAs below a 2.0 cumulative U of MN and/or UMD Term GPA at the end of spring semester. Please share this with your students in all 1000-5000 level classes, reduce student's anxiety.
This week UMD will be making available to students an ONLINE (not paper) way to start the conversation with faculty about if an INCOMPLETE contract (I Grade) is possible. I will send this in a separate email with separate "how-this-works" information. This has been used by the other campuses in the system for two years now. We will figure this out together.
Now more than ever, it is essential to have the contract/agreement documented and even more importantly directly shared with your department. There is no positive angle to say this. Think about what would need to happen if either party to the contract passed away. I's change to F grades in one year unless someone knows the situation and has information on which to take action. I want to protect you, our precious faculty and students. We can only do that if you help us gather the information and share it.
Final grade rosters were intentionally delayed to accommodate the changes to S/N grading and late withdrawal. Here are the associated changes:
Tomorrow, April 30 at 11:59 PM is the last opportunity for a student to change their class grading basis to S/N grading.
If you have students who have "dropped" off the face of your class, please email them ONE MORE TIME. Share this specifically. Now is not the time to say "They will just have to figure it out... this is college. You are right it is, however nothing about this is "normal" and they should get it.
This deadline we are seeing is increasing the anxiety of some students who are on the bubble with grades of C+, C, C-. If you can help them think through their options that would be great. Need help? email or call me. 218-726-8795 leave a message and a number of how I may reach you. I am happy to help you help your students.
Your expert guidance might be the tipping point they need to cope and take action.
May 1 at 11:59 PM is the last opportunity for a student to drop a class, no questions asked, no permission needed.
May 4 final grade rosters available for you in MyU for regular and second half spring term classes.
Final grades are intentionally delayed to reduce the number of student requests for "I" incomplete grades and to support faculty who have "moved mountains of roadblocks" to provide new ways of teaching and learning and may need a bit more time to compute and submit the final grades. Thank you faculty and staff who helped make this possible. Thank you!
May 20 by 11:59 PM final grades are due
If you are done grading before May 20, please submit your grades. We will begin awarding almost 2000 UMD degrees starting May 8 for those students for whom all grades have been received as final.
May 21 we will begin athletic and veteran certification, with along with academic probation to follow.
Between May 2 and May 4 by 5:00 PM please take action: Verify that each of your students are correctly enrolled or not and on your grade roster. Students may forget to register or have registered for the wrong section.
Given the date changes there is almost no "grace" in the timeline to get your rosters corrected before grading begins.
Canvas Update - The "push" technology to send final grades to the official grade roster is available. Link to more information Some of you reported problems with this at midterm. YOU WERE CORRECT. This is because the University has not turned on the service to support midterm grading.
ITSS offers in-person support for grading and any other IT questions. Schedule for Educational Technology support

Check the Public Class Schedule or your Faculty Center if you would like to verify that Class "End Date of Instruction" (finals are scheduled AFTER this date in the spring and fall terms.)
Q. Spring 2020 S-N grading basis option: Will I know if students have selected an S-N option?
A: Yes. Instructors have always been able to see a student's chosen GRADE BASIS on your Class Roster and Grade Rosters in Faculty Center. This is one of the points I ask faculty to check in my "getting ready for the semester and mid-term emails to faculty."

Q. Spring 2020 S-N grading basis option: Should the student tell me that they are changing to S-N?
A: No. Students have to officially declare through the MyU registration system that they want the S-N only grading option. If students who do not want to change, there is NO ACTION required.
Q. Spring 2020 S-N grading basis option: Does an S or N grade work for students "repeating" a course?
A: Yes. U of MN policy is "the last attempt counts." S - N is a valid attempt. The spring 2020 class grade is the "keeper" and the former class grade is "excluded" and those credits and GPA points no longer impact the statistical calculations of "earned hours" or "GPA."
The prior attempt(s) remain in the academic record and display on the official transcript.
Q. Spring 2020 S-N grading basis option: Do I have to know if students have selected an S-N option?
A: No. Follow the same grading rubric is on your syllabus or you have expressly written as modified to your students.
Q. Spring 2020 S-N grading basis option: If I enter a grade of B+ (or any other A-F grade) how does this work?
A: If a students updates their registration to S-N only, the PeopleSoft registration system automatically converts the reported grade to an S or an N as the "Official" University grade. the "Official" grade is what impacts GPA statistical calculations and what is displayed on the Official Transcript. In the case of S or N, there is no GPA impact. S or N is the grade displayed on the Official Transcript.
Q. Spring 2020 S-N grading basis option: Can the University go back and know what grade I submitted?
A: Yes! The PeopleSoft records system records and keeps "forever" both the grade that the faculty officially submitted as "approved." It also records and keeps "forever" the "Official Grade." Usually these are one in the same. However, if there is a Grade Change we have differences, and in the case of a Student Option grading basis selection we have both grades:
1) submitted as "approved" grade and 2) the "official" grade. The "Official" grade is what impacts GPA statistical calculations and what is displayed on the Official Transcript.

Q: Fall 2020: I got a "Prerequisite error" message, Help!
A: Each college and some departments within the College manage Class Permissions differently. I learned on Friday (thank you Michele Hatcher) that there is a Master list being generated of who is doing what. Want this question. I hope to have a copy posted by the end of Monday, March 30 for everyone to reference and have as a resource as you help students.
What to say when you DON'T KNOW what to say:
If students need a Class Permission to register, contact the faculty member listed to teach the class or contact the academic department offering the class. Use the UMD directory search option from d.umn.edu.
If a Class Permission is given and "waiting for students to select the register button", students can see every granted Class Permission for them, by going to Schedule Builder from MyU Academics. Select the Class Permission option located on the left side of options. All granted Class Permissions are visible to confirm and build their Confidence BEFORE going to their Registration Shopping cart.
