Taiwan is a kingdom of fruits, and pineapple is one of its representatives. Today, Taiwan’s pineapple cakes are Taiwan’s representative souvenirs, but most people may not now that Taiwan was the world’s top producer of canned pineapples for a period after World War II, and its origins were established during the Japanese occupation. The main production areas of pineapples are Fengshan and Dashu in the south, and Changhua and Yuanlin in the center.
Therefore, the beginning of canned pineapples is also related to these two major producing areas. The Dashu area has become a major pineapple production area due to its environmental and climatic conditions suitable for pineapple growth. Jiuqutang once had 11 pineapple canning factories due to the railway station setting up, so it is convenient for transportation. Currently, only the third one of the Taifang Chamber of Commerce is left. The three buildings of the Fourth Factory and the Fourth Factory are the only remaining pineapple canning industry buildings from the Japanese colonial period in Taiwan.
Taifang Chamber of Commerce was founded in 1918 by Ye Jintu, a businessman from Dadaocheng, Taipei. Ye Jintu was one of the early Taiwanese businessmen after the Japanese and Taro Okamura founded the pineapple canned industry. He was called pineapple because of his fortune in the pineapple canned industry. king. The Taifang Chamber of Commerce established six factories in Yuanlin and Dashu, the production areas of pineapples in Taipei. The third and fourth factories were established in Jiuqutang in 1925, and the fifth factory was established in Xianzaijiao in 1930.

The homeland of pineapples is in the Americas. It is said that the Italian explorer Columbus went to the Americas in the 15th century and brought pineapples back to Europe from Guadeloupe in the Caribbean in 1493 AD. With the advent of the Age of Discovery, pineapples have also spread to the world, including China. It is speculated that the Portuguese first brought pineapples to Macau in the 16th century and then entered the country. Historical records show that the Portuguese arrived in Macau in the 32nd year of the Jiajing reign of the Ming Dynasty and in early 153 AD and requested trade. The following year they received permission to trade along the coast of Guangdong. There is no clear record of the actual situation of pineapples entering China, but it must not have been common in the early days. There are also online messages that change the word pineapple in the above text to boluo, because the name for pineapple in Fujian is boluo, the same as in Guangdong and Hong Kong. However, the "Compendium of Materia Medica" finalized in 1578, the sixth year of Wanli in the Ming Dynasty, did not mention either pineapple or polo.
