As we help our AAC Users learn use language for all purposes, we need visual tools to help them express their opinions and make choices. Think back to all the choices you've made in your own life: what to eat, what to wear, what music to listen to, what books to read, who to build a friendship or a relationship with, what classes to take, where to live, what your job would be... the list is endless. As our students grow, we need to maximize the choices they are able to make for themselves, as a matter of safety and quality of life.
Talking Mats are a great example of a simple, yet powerful way to do this! In the 8-minute video below I give a demonstration of how can work with any AAC device. I also explain how you can easily integrate it into writing curriculum in the classroom so that it's embedded in BOTH academic and life skills instruction.
