The Wet California Journey
One day we were suffering from one of the biggest droughts in history, the next day we’re having massive floods and people are watching their homes being destroyed. This crazy weather has been going on since December. However, we did have two seperate droughts in the past decade. In this article, California had a wondrous journey through two crazy droughts and massive floods; what we could we possibly be experiencing next?
California experienced two extreme droughts throughout the last decade. The 2020-2022 drought was a huge blow to California’s water supply.
We also had a drought from 2011-2017. So if you just moved to this waterless state, consider yourself unlucky. The California Drought Action, says “But we are now facing a historic level of dryness that has gone on for 3 years. And it’s only getting worse: 2022 had the driest January, February, and March in over 100 years.” What this means is that last year was the driest period ever, meaning that big lakes and rivers were used just for you to take a thirty minute shower. In addition, the droughts seriously affected a ton of things. For example, many animals are threatened by extinction. Fish. The “American Rivers” website. Says, “Decreased flows and rising water temperatures threaten fish and wildlife and have severe implications for regional biodiversity.” The biodiversity of the Monterey Bay could be in serious trouble just because you wanted to take a bath with cool bubbles. In conclusion, the two droughts in the past decade have seriously affected our community, biodiversity, and wildlife. But then, it may have just gotten worse.
The weather has gone from bad to worse. We have been experiencing the wettest weather since the 1800s. So we went from no water to too much water. So now you can take a 30 minute shower. Just kidding, don't do that, it's wasteful. According to Wikipedia, “The flooding in late December 2022 and early January 2023 alleviated some of the drought conditions by January 3.” That means that this crazy weather is actually the greatest thing that could’ve happened, because now we have enough water. So, There are some theories. Most people think that this is a result of climate change, so we caused all of this. It’s all our fault. Our actions destroyed houses, wildlife homes, many trees and people's lives were taken. We caused slippery roads, floods, rising seas, etc. Many people had already predicted massive storms. Sadly, they were right. According to NBC News, “As California grapples with the spread of wildfires and severe drought, the threat of flooding may seem like an unlikely cause for concern. However, a new study warns that the state could be hit by a "megaflood" in the not-too-distant future, potentially putting millions across the state at risk.” This means that people knew what would happen. And oh boy were they right. In conclusion, California has been experiencing super crazy weather. Hundreds have died. Many are in danger. Homes are being destroyed one by one. But you may be asking yourself, what’s next?
Will there be more massive floods? Or will it calm down? As of April, we aren’t really experiencing anything anymore. But we are slowly recovering from the damage of the past storms. According to The Weather Channel, it said on March 23, 2023, “Bay Area with winds up to 80 mph, downing hundreds of trees and knocking out power to over 230,000 residents. A pair of tornadoes danced briefly through the Los Angeles Basin, including L.A. County's first 1-rated tornado (EF1) in 40 years.” If we don’t stop with climate change or aren’t able to reduce it, we could be in serious trouble.
Also, “Over 90% of San Francisco's average rain falls from November through April. From April through June, that amounts to about 2.5 inches of rain in an average spring.” San Francisco is very close to our coast. So we could expect a bit more but nothing too extreme. So in conclusion, it seems you can sleep safely. However, we have to be prepared for anything.
California has gone through one of the most extreme weather patterns ever. From one of the biggest droughts in history, to one of the biggest storms and floods ever. California has really gone through a roller coaster all in the span of a decade. Lives were lost, houses were destroyed and people found themselves in horrible situations. This is certainly a wake-up call to take action to prevent global warming from worsening. We went through a true historical event that will be remembered throughout the Golden State.
