As the fall season ends and basketball wraps up there have been so many amazing highlights from the season from 6th-grade boys and girls to the 8th grade. As the 2022-2023 Basketball Season comes to an end, let's look at some highlights from this season.
6th Grade Basketball
The 6th graders played almost every Saturday and began to learn or freshen up on their basketball fundamentals. Matt David (6th girls) and Jeffery Nakamura (6th boys) were the coaches for this year's basketball teams and courageously led them through the whole year. Hopefully, all of this year's 6 graders will try out for the 7th-grade team next year!
7th Grade Girls Basketball
The 7th-grade girls team, coached by Nicole Caoili, had a record of 2-9. It was a rough season but there was a lot of improvement. Grace Grahl states, “I think we improved our skills a lot and had fun.” Losing to Buena Vista in the playoffs ended their season, but hopefully, we will see everyone try out for the 8th-grade team next year.
7th Grade Boys Basketball
The 7th-grade boys who were led by Jake Glazier and Brody Greer had a good season this year with a record of 7-4. According to Nicholai Schmidt, it was “Alright.” With many ups and downs, the season ended with a loss in the playoffs to Palma. Hopefully, all of the players will try out next year for the 8th-grade team.
8th Grade Girls Basketball
The 8th-grade girls (coached by Mr. Woodward) finished this season with an overall record of 6-3 and the title of MTJL champions. They started the year off not so well but over the course of the four month season developed more skills and were able to finish the year off strong winning the championship against San Benancio with a score of 20-15. They were the only basketball team to make it to the championship game. Eliana Sogge states, "We started improving our shots and got a stronger offense with all of our offensive plays.”
8th Grade Boys Basketball
The start of the season looked strong but couldn’t pull it out in the end. The boys have played many teams in the league and have successfully beaten them. Jake Glazier and Brody Greer coached the boys through the year teaching them skills to take on with them to high school. Lucas Rocha states, “Throughout the year, I think we improved on communicating with everyone and our ball security.” The boys were such a competitive team this year. We hope that most of them go on to play at the high school level. The boys got so close to the championships but couldn't quite get there with their 34-54 loss to Palma.
As we head into the spring season, so many kids are eager to play tennis, wrestling, and track. We hope to see you Cougars out there having fun whether you're playing a sport or cheering for your friends and classmates!
