TEACHER COURSE RECOMMENDATIONS and WAIVER TO ENROLL IN CLASSES
Coventry High School values each student’s individuality and recognizes its responsibility to ensure the success of each student. This responsibility includes student placement in core academic courses. Students are placed in leveled academic classes based on the joint recommendation of teachers and school counselors. It is the school’s goal to balance the teachers’ recommendations and the rigor of the curriculum with the academic, personal, social and emotional needs of the student.
Should parents or guardians disagree with teacher recommendations and the reasons offered for placement of the child, the parent must contact the curriculum coordinator, the school counselor or the guidance curriculum coordinator.
If the professional school staff still feels that the student is placed appropriately, a parent may request a waiver from the guidance office to request consideration for placement in a non-recommended course. All waivers are reviewed and students may be placed in classes on a space available basis. If a parent of a student not recommended for an honors or an AP® course requests a waiver, the student must see the curriculum coordinator for that area in order to discuss additional required work. No schedule changes are completed until all required forms are signed and returned to the school counselor, reviewed, and approved by the guidance curriculum coordinator. All waivers require parents to provide additional academic support, such as a private tutor, in the event a student is struggling in the non-recommended placement. Please be aware that, due to any number of factors, students may not always be able to enroll in their requested courses.
