SOCIAL STUDIES
The Social Studies program is a NCSS (National Council on the Social Studies) Standards Based program which offers students opportunities to pursue the study of American history through the use of varied instructional practices and an array of formative and summative assessments. The major areas of study in the three sequential classes include some World History and a chronological discussion of American history topics from the Renaissance to the present. Rhode Island GSEs for Civics, Historical Perspectives and RI History are embedded where appropriate in grades 9- 11, and also, where applicable in Social Studies electives. (Civics GSEs are in Appendix B). Elective offerings complement the history curriculum. Students seeking a humanities area of study in college are encouraged to take four years of Social Studies classes.
Students also have the opportunity to take College Board approved Advanced Placement courses in United States History, American Government and Psychology. Common course assessments are given in every class. These assessments help the students complete the required graduation requirements and the student’s Googlio requirement.
The following chart shows the social studies course sequence and the electives available at each grade level.
