COURSE OFFERINGS and CLASSIFICATIONS
Courses at Coventry High School focus on high expectations and standards for all students and challenges for all ability levels. All courses are designed to prepare students for the demands and rigor of all post-secondary options, including college, the military, and the world of work. CHS will offer the following academic levels:
Within this Program of Studies, classes are listed within curricular departments by course code, name, grade levels and credits. Some classes may need a prerequisite, a course taken prior to enrolling in another course. In addition, there are several classifications used to distinguish coursework which provide students with additional rigor, challenges and workload. These are:
Concurrent Enrollment Opportunities
Some courses are eligible for EEP credit through Rhode Island College. Such concurrent enrollment allows the student to apply credits earned at Coventry High to Rhode Island College, which in turn allows students to transfer these credits to other selected colleges and universities. Students may earn up to 8 credits from selected science lab courses. Students must purchase these credits from RIC on a per-credit basis. The courses listed below offer this opportunity, but all may not be offered in any given school years due to enrollment.
Advanced Placement (AP®)
The curriculum in these courses is equivalent to the requirements of a full-year college level course. Students and parents alike must realize that an above-average investment of talent, time and energy are the prerequisites necessary for success. Teachers of these courses have received specialized training in the appropriate curriculum. Students must fulfill all requirements in order to receive Advanced Placement Credit and are required to take the annual Advanced Placement examination administered by the College Board. Students must register for the AP exam and exam fees, must be paid in full by the end of the the first semester or the AP status will be removed from the student's transcript and AP weight will be removed from the grade point average. Students who are registered for the exam and withdraw after the Add/Drop period with extenuating circumstances will receive a WP or WF on their transcript and fees are non-refundable. A student scoring a 3, 4, or 5 on the AP® exam may be eligible for advanced placement in college courses. AP® courses receive the same weight as an honors level class when calculated into the grade point average. Students are encouraged to check with their college or university of interest to see how AP® scores are considered.
Honors Courses
Honors courses encompass an accelerated program for those students who have shown excellent progress and aptitude. The curriculum is very demanding in each area of study and an extraordinary amount of out-of-class time is necessary to be successful in Honors level classes. Students should possess a respect for learning, an intellectual curiosity and a willingness to accept responsibility for the direction of their own learning. Students must maintain at least a ‘B+’ average by the end of the fourth quarter to be recommended for honors classes the following school year.
