SPECIALIZED PROGRAMS for ALL STUDENTS
Career and Technical Center
All students have the option of attending the Regional Career and Technical Center at Coventry High School, regardless of their future career and or college goals. This center offers programs in eight areas. All are three-year programs and begin in the 10th grade, although in some programs, students may elect to enter in grade 11. Most students will complete the necessary criteria and receive certification or licensure in their area. A complete description of these course offerings can be found in this Program of Studies.
Internships, Work Study and Business Cooperative
Senior students have several opportunities to explore careers and earn credits while in high school. Internships allow students to work with a teacher for a semester to gain experience in an educational or vocational area. The Work Study and Business Cooperative programs allow students to volunteer in a setting or even work in a job that may be related to a career interest. In both programs, students are required to complete reports and reflections of their experiences, engage in standards-based assignments and submit a portfolio relating to their work area. Students should see their guidance counselor for an application and more detailed information about these programs.
Dual Enrollment (off campus)
Eligible seniors have the option of completing their final year at a local college. Both the Community College of Rhode Island (Running Start) and Johnson and Wales University (Early Enrollment Program) have programs that provide this educational experience. These dual enrollment programs afford the student the opportunity to gain up to 24 college credits while still considered a senior at Coventry High School. As such, students may be able to participate in clubs, athletics, proms and in the graduation ceremony. Certain rules apply regarding eligibility and other limitations; students interested in either program should see their guidance counselor early in their junior year.
Advisory/Personalization
Most students will also have a non-graded advisory class in their schedules. Advisory is an opportunity for every student to have a teacher who gets to know that student well and can support and assist that student through high school. RI Board of Regents High School Reform regulations encourage advisories as a means of personalizing the school environment. Advisories are also instrumental in helping students complete their proficiency based graduation requirements.
