COURSE DESCRIPTION: The purpose of this course is to enable students to read complex texts with understanding and to write prose of sufficient richness and complexity to communicate effectively with mature readers. COURSE DESCRIPTION: The purpose of this course is to engage students in the careful reading and critical analysis of imaginative literature. Through the close reading of selected texts, students deepen their understanding of the ways writers use language to provide both meaning and pleasure for their readers. As students read, they consider a work’s structure, style and themes, exploring how the author creates meaning through diction, syntax, figurative language and a wide range of literary devices. The course includes intensive study of representative works from various genres and periods. The reading in this course is both wide and deep and the writing emphasizes the experience of literature, the interpretation of literature and the evaluation of literature. This combination of knowledge and skills will enable students to effectively participate in student publications, be better communicators, and be more aware as media consumers.

COURSE DESCRIPTION: Students in this course will study the creative forms of written expression, especially descriptive prose, poetry, and fiction writing. Some students may wish to dabble in script-writing as well. In our writing activities we will work on individual expression, finding one’s own voice, using sensory details, figurative language, various poetic forms, and the elements of fiction. Many writing experiences comprise the bulk of the class. In addition, the study of professional pieces that demonstrate effective techniques and discussion of class members’ writing will allow the class to develop an understanding of and appreciation for what works in writing and why it works.

COURSE DESCRIPTION: English 9 is designed to provide students with the reading, writing, and speaking skills that they will need to succeed throughout their high school years. Grammar and vocabulary work aid in the assimilation and expression of ideas. By reading a variety of fiction, non-fiction, poetry, and drama, students will recognize the elements of each of these writing forms and hone their comprehension and interpretation skills. Required readings include short stories, novels, poems, and drama from around the world, as well as non-fiction articles for discussion and interpretation. In addition to assigned readings, students will be required to participate in sustained silent reading on a regular basis. Students write a variety of compositions including paragraphs, journals, essays, letters, and a research paper. Students also practice the writing process by pre-writing, writing, and revising.

ORAL COMMUNICATION FOCUS: Speech assignments will focus on an introduction to the fundamentals of public speaking, with an emphasis on audience, purpose, and the role of the speaker.

COURSE DESCRIPTION: Student Publications-N provides a laboratory experience in the production of the school’s newspaper, The Minute, published 3 times per trimester and The Hi-Times, published weekly. Because the student has already had an introduction to journalistic writing, this course provides a way for students to strengthen their journalistic abilities. Along with writing skill, the student also develops skill in page layout and graphic design concepts and use of desktop publishing software (such as Adobe PageMaker, and Photoshop). The students develop a sense of working on a production staff and meeting deadlines. In their second year, staff members may apply for various editor positions. Because The Minute is funded by advertising, each staff member helps finance the publication by selling ads. May be repeated for credit.

COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course provides laboratory experience in the production of the school yearbook, The Concordian. Students study written communication, editing, proofreading, design of yearbooks, how to plan and work within a budget, how to sell advertising as well as take orders for the yearbook to meet the planned budget. The class also provides an opportunity for staff members to develop interpersonal and professional skills while setting goals and working together to achieve these goals. Students will be expected to write copy and captions, design layouts and fulfill various staff positions. May be repeated for credit.

COURSE DESCRIPTION: In this class students will study and analyze the basics of theatre and acting. Pantomime improvisation and monologue will be used as tools to understand the importance of body language in non-verbal communication and voice control. Understanding costumes and make-up of historical and modern theater will be demonstrated through the creation of a technical plot. Blocking, characterization, and interpretation will be emphasized through the production of a one-act play. Students will be required to attend a number of after-school rehearsals during the production.

1048 THEMES IN LITERATURE: Evolution of the Super Hero

COURSE DESCRIPTION: Iron Man, Thor, Batman, Spiderman – These super heroes of today probably had their roots in the legendary heroes of the past. This course will focus on the origins and development of the superhero from Greek times through today. Students will learn through the use of short stories, comic books, TV series, and video and will research and analyze what makes a superhero, the anti-hero, and their nemeses. Students will study how these literary characters have remained the same while evolving into the modern heroes/nemeses of the film screen today, and explore what the superhero might look like in the future.

1052 WORLD LITERATURE: Conflict and Survival

COURSE DESCRIPTION: Typhoon Haiyan, the Great Depression, the Holocaust – these events bring to mind images of hardship and struggle . . . and survival. These themes are also prominent in the writing of the world. This course will examine the undying spirit of humans to survive despite the worst circumstances brought on by natural disasters or human oppression. An exploration of various genres by authors of diverse eras and nationalities will allow the class to consider how the theme of survival may be treated in various cultures. Students will analyze how literature illuminates humanity’s struggle to understand the human condition and our own lives.
