Prerequisite: 2 years previous musical training such as piano, band, choir, or orchestra and/or approved by music department staff.
COURSE DESCRIPTION: AP Music Theory is a course based on the content established and copyrighted by the College Board. The course is not intended to be used as a dual credit course. The AP Music Theory course corresponds to two semesters of a typical introductory college music theory course that covers topics such as musicianship, theory, musical materials, and procedures. Through the course, students develop the ability to recognize, understand, and describe basic materials and processes of music that are heard or presented in a score. Development of aural skills is a primary objective. Performance is also part of the learning process. Students understand basic concepts and terminology by listening to and performing a wide variety of music. Students will be expected to take the AP Music Theory Exam in May. Students absent on the day of the exam are responsible for the unused test fee of approximately $15.00. This course may be taught online.
