Dual Credit Courses

Dual Credit with Ivy Tech – 1 semester course. Students will take the Knowledge Assessment English test or be a junior or senior with a 2.6 GPA or higher and apply for admission to Ivy Tech Community College. College credits are awarded to the student FREE of charge for earning a final grade of “C” or better based on the Ivy Tech grading scale. Dual Credits earned – 3 credits per semester. Students must arrange their own transportation as off-campus observations are required.

Recommended Prerequisites: One or more of the following FACS courses - Child Development and Parenting, Preparing for College and Careers, Nutrition and Wellness, and/or approval of the instructor, Mrs. Utley.

COURSE DESCRIPTION: Early Childhood Education I - prepares students for employment in early childhood education and related services and provides the foundations for study in higher education that leads to early childhood education and other child-related careers. A project-based approach that utilizes higher order thinking, communication, leadership, and management processes is recommended in order to integrate suggested topics into the study of early childhood education and services. The course of study includes, but is not limited to: planning and guiding developmentally appropriate activities for young children; developmentally appropriate practices of guidance and discipline; overview of basic health and safety principles when working with children; overview of management and operation of licensed child care facilities or educational settings; Indiana state child care regulations and licensing requirements and employability skills. Experiences in one or more child care / preschool or Kindergarten laboratories, resumes, and career portfolios are required components. A standards-based plan for each student guides the student's laboratory/field experiences. Students are monitored in their laboratory/field experiences by the Early Childhood Education teacher. Student laboratory/field experiences may be either school- based or "on-the-job" in community-based early childhood education centers or in a combination of the two. Foundation work is included for students to meet content knowledge requirements for the CDA (Child Development Associate) credential. Standards and course specifications are compatible with on-the-job training and related instruction components of the CCDS (Child Care Development Specialist) registered apprenticeship, which is available through the USDOL/BAT. Articulation with postsecondary programs is encouraged. This course is recommended for students with interests in early childhood education and services career paths and provides the foundation for study in higher education that leads to child-related and/or education careers.

  • Credits: three credits per semester for Ivy Tech, one credit per semester for Concord High School

  • A Core 40, Core 40 with Academic Honors, and Core 40 with Technical Honors diploma elective and directed elective course.

  • Course Fee: $25.00 for supplies

Off campus child care observations are required. Students must arrange their own transportation.

7161 Principles of Teaching (IVY ECDC 101) DUAL CREDIT Weighted .50 New 2022-23 Education Careers Pathway - Level 1 Course

  • COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course provides a general introduction to the field of teaching. Students will explore educational careers, teaching preparation, and professional expectations as well as requirements for teacher certification. Current trends and issues in education will be examined. A minimum 20 hour classroom observation experience is required for successful completion of this course.
