COURSE DESCRIPTION: AP 2-D Design is a course established and copyrighted by the College Board. The course is not intended to be used as a dual credit course. The AP Program offers three studio art courses and portfolios: 2-Dimensional Design, 3-Dimensional Design, and Drawing. The AP Art portfolios are designed for students who are seriously interested in the practical experience of art. The portfolios correspond to most college foundation courses. Students submit portfolios for evaluation at the end of the school year. Students may choose to submit any or all of the Drawing, 2-Dimensional Design, or 3-Dimensional design portfolios. AP Art students create a portfolio of work to demonstrate the artistic skills and ideas they have developed, refined, and applied over the course of the year to produce visual compositions. The portfolio will have two sections: Sustained Investigation and Selected works. Students enrolled in this course are responsible for submitting portfolios for AP scoring. Failure to meet this expectation will result in having to pay the unused assessment fee of approximately $15.00

The 3-D Design portfolio involves decision making about how to use the elements and principles of art as they relate to the integration of depth, space, volume, and surface, either actual or virtual. Students' portfolios demonstrate skills and ideas developed, refined, and applied throughout the course to produce visual compositions. Students may choose to submit any or all of the portfolios. Portfolios are evaluated based on standardized scoring descriptors aligned with skills and understanding 27 Indiana Department of Education High School Course Titles and Descriptions developed in college foundation courses. The portfolio will have two sections: Sustained Investigation and Selected works. Students enrolled in this course are responsible for submitting portfolios for AP scoring. The AP Studio Art Program consists of three portfolio exams—2-D Design, 3-D Design, and Drawing—corresponding to the college 26 Indiana Department of Education High School Course Titles and Descriptions foundation courses. Portfolios allow flexibility of coursework while guiding students to produce college-level quality, artistic investigation, and breadth of work. The Drawing portfolio addresses issues such as line quality, light and shade, rendering of form, composition, surface manipulation, the illusion of depth, and mark-making. Students' portfolios demonstrate skills and ideas developed, refined, and applied throughout the course to produce visual compositions. Students may choose to submit any or all of the portfolios. Portfolios are evaluated based on standardized scoring descriptors aligned with skills and understanding developed in college foundation courses. COURSE DESCRIPTION: Intro to 2-D Art’s main focus will be hands-on skills for the beginning artist, such as drawing, painting, printmaking, and lettering. Within each area covered, the students will be introduced to the techniques and characteristics of the media involved. Vocabulary, such as the elements and principles of art and design, will be given to enhance the student’s ability to create interesting pieces. This course also includes activities and course work in the areas of art history, art criticism, and aesthetics.
A sketchbook will be required both for brainstorming ideas and for continuing the advancement of the student’s skill level. Homework assignments will take up to two hours per week. Completion of this course will provide a solid background for advanced study and application in upper-level courses aimed at more specific areas, such as Drawing, Painting or Sculpture I.

COURSE DESCRIPTION: Art History is a course based on the Indiana Academic Standards for Visual Art. Students taking Art History engage in sequential learning experiences that encompass art history, art criticism, aesthetics, and production. Students study works of art and artifacts from world cultures, engage in historically relevant studio activities; utilize research skills to discover social, political, economic, technological, environmental, and historical trends and connections; analyze, interpret, theorize, and make informed judgments about artwork and the nature of art; relate art to other disciplines and discover opportunities for integration; and incorporate literacy and presentational skills. Students utilize the resources of art museums, galleries, and studios, and identify art-related careers.

COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course introduces students to the basic fundamentals of working with clay. Students will be exposed to hand-building techniques, such as pinch, coil, and slab, during the trimester. Students will also explore clay and glaze types and develop skills in building both functional and non-functional projects. A brief introduction to the wheel will round out the course objectives. Students will be expected to sketch out ideas before creating the final products. Completion of this course will establish a foundation for further ceramic interests. This course also includes activities and course work in the areas of art history, art criticism, and aesthetics. For the more advanced students: museum visits, personal displays and gallery spotlight will also be required. Also, a minimum of 7 required project pieces of the student’s highest quality, along with verbal and written in-class critiques will encompass the production for this course.

COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course will prepare students for the communications age by equipping them with the skills necessary to create digital art images and compose visual presentations in a variety of categories including advertising layout, logo design, photo effects, web images, and fine art imaging. There will be discussions and reading about using the computer as an electric darkroom. Students will become proficient using Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, and other industry standard graphics programs. Some computer knowledge is helpful, but not necessary. The second semester will build on the skills developed in Computer Graphics 1 and prepare students for work in the web design marketplace by equipping them with the skills and software knowledge to compose web sites and post them on the World Wide Web. Students will learn Macromedia Dreamweaver and other web design programs as well as basic HTML (Hypertext Markup Language) Java Script and the functions of Java Applets and introduction to Macromedia Flash. The main emphasis will be on artistic and professional development of web pages. Each student will create, post, and maintain their personal web page. Estimated cost for this course is $15.00 for Level 1.

COURSE DESCRIPTION: Digital Design Graphics will help students to understand and create the most common types of computer graphics used in visual communications. Skills are developed through work with professional vector-based and page layout software used in the industry. Additionally, students will be introduced to a full range of image input technology and manipulation including conventional photography, digital imaging, and computer scanners. Students will learn to communicate concepts and ideas through various imaging devices.

COURSE DESCRIPTION: Drawing is designed to teach the basic fundamentals of drawing and composition. Terminology, such as the elements and principles of design, will be given in order to enhance the student’s ability to create interesting compositions. The students will learn different techniques of drawing objects in proportion and shading them realistically through demonstrations, textbooks, and other visual aids. The student will be required to keep a sketchbook for practicing his/her drawing lessons and to possibly use as a reference for large-scale drawings that will be completed in class. Sketchbook assignments will take up to two hours per week. Upon completion of this course, the student should be able to express him or herself artistically and use the skills he/she has learned to seek out other areas of art. This course also includes activities and course work in the areas of art history, art criticism and aesthetics. Estimated cost is $5-$15.

COURSE DESCRIPTION: Graphic Design and Layout teaches design process and the proper and creative use of type as a means to develop effective communications for global, corporate and social application. Students will create samples for a portfolio, which may include elements or comprehensive projects in logo, stationery, posters, newspaper, magazine, billboard, and interface design.

COURSE DESCRIPTION: Students create rings and pendants using the following techniques: lost-wax casting, fabrication techniques, tying knots known as Macramé’, and wire which is formed. Techniques students will learn include: wax carving, sawing, piercing, filing, polishing, tying knots, and bending wire with a jig. The tying of knots or Macramé’ creates a softer version of jewelry. Students make beads using materials such as clay, cut dowel rods, and sea glass. The forming of wire creates interesting patterned jewelry. Estimated cost for this course is $30.00.

Various brush techniques will be explored in watercolor, acrylic, tempera, etc. Color theory and how color affects the surroundings will be discussed and explored in depth. Elements and principles of design will be also reviewed to enhance the student’s final work. A sketchbook will be required and the student will be expected to sketch his/her ideas before beginning a new painting. COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course is an exploration of digital photography, digital image-editing and photographic techniques. This course explores the elements and principles of art and the basic language of art as it applies to digital photography. The primary focus of this class is to explore visual arts through a discipline based curriculum. Digital photography will include projects, as well as make connections to reading, writing, discussion, observation, reflection and critique. Students considering this course must be prepared to spend at least two hours outside of class per week. Students are encouraged to use their own digital camera. This will allow students to have more time and flexibility to complete projects. Some cameras will be available on a check-out basis. The estimated cost for this course is $40.00

COURSE DESCRIPTION: Principles of Digital Design introduces students to fundamental design theory. Investigations into design theory and color dynamics will provide experiences in applying design theory, ideas and creative problem solving, critical peer evaluation, and presentation skills. Students will have the opportunity to apply the design theory through an understanding of basic photographic theory and technique. Topics will include image capture, processing, various output methods, and light.

COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course is designed to help students become more aware of three-dimensional shapes and forms as they relate to the space around them. A major focus of this course - the elements and principles of 3-D art design - will accompany the student’s overall understanding. This course is designed to challenge students in visual recognition, skill ability, creativity and craftsmanship Materials which may be used are Styrofoam, wood, wire, and paper. A study of three-dimensional artists, the use of design terminology and critiques of student projects will round out the requirements. This course also includes activities and course work in the areas of art history, art criticism, and aesthetics. A sketchbook will be required.
