Grade 11
Prerequisite: Students are encouraged to consult their current English teacher and their parents when considering AP English.
COURSE DESCRIPTION: The purpose of this course is to engage students in the careful reading and critical analysis of imaginative literature. Through the close reading of selected texts, students deepen their understanding of the ways writers use language to provide both meaning and pleasure for their readers. As students read, they consider a work’s structure, style and themes, exploring how the author creates meaning through diction, syntax, figurative language and a wide range of literary devices. The course includes intensive study of representative works from various genres and periods. The reading in this course is both wide and deep and the writing emphasizes the experience of literature, the interpretation of literature and the evaluation of literature. Students will be expected to take the AP English Literature Exam in May. Students absent on the day of the exam are responsible for the unused test fee of approximately $15.00.
