Used To (solía)
We use it to talk about things that we have done repeatedly in the past but no longer do them
It follows the pattern used to + infinitive (without to)
👉 I used to study Spanish when I was in high school
👉 She didn’t use to eat meat, but now she eats it every day
👉 Did he use to work out at this gym when he lived in this city?
Important! In negative sentences and questions it’s use to instead of used to
Would (solía)
We can also use “would” to talk about past habits but only with “action verbs“. We don’t use it in negative sentences or questions.
👉 I would go biking every weekend when I was at university (solía…)
👉 He would smoke but he gave up a few years ago (solía…)
Get Used To (acostumbrarse a)
We use it when we are starting to become accustomed to doing something
If follows the pattern get used to + verb + ing or get used to + noun
👉 I am getting used to living in a big city
👉 She didn’t get used to snowboarding because she gave up after one lesson
👉 Has he gotten used to taking the bus yet?
👉 You get used to the noise
👉 Did you get used to the traffic?
Be Used To (estar acostumbrado a)
We use it when we are already accustomed to doing something
It follows the pattern be used to + verb + ing or noun
👉 I am used to living in a big city
👉 Even after six months of lessons, she is not used to speaking English yet
👉 Is he used to playing the guitar? He’s been practising for weeks
👉 You are used to the noise, but I’m still struggling
👉 Are you used to the traffic in this area?
