The second conditional is also known as the unreal conditional because it is used to talk about an unlikely or impossible outcome that wouldn’t happen in most cases.
To form the second conditional we use the formula If + past simple, would / could + infinitive (without to). Let’s see some examples:
👉 If we won the lottery, we would travel around the world → Si ganásemos la lotería, viajaríamos por todo el mundo
👉 If I had wings, I would fly to Japan → Si tuviese alas, volaría a Japón
👉 Lisa would learn to surf if she lived near the beach → Lisa aprendería a surfear si viviese cerca de la playa
👉 I wouldn’t work anymore if I were rich → No trabajaría nunca más si fuese rico
👉 If the children had a pool, they would swim every day → Si los niños tuviesen una piscina, nadarían todos los días
Remember! If a sentence begins with an if clause it is followed by a comma
