Aims of the Course

Geography is a multi-discipline subject that involves the physical and human world we live in. This specification takes a thematic approach, with content ogranised by human and physical environments. It enables students to explore the people – environment challenges we face in the UK. Geography really does provide an education for life. Employers and universities value the broad range of transferable skills that geography delivers. The course aims to prepare students for further education through building competence, confidence and increasing independence in their learning.

General Description

Students will complete work within three components over the two years of the course. They will also carry out a fieldwork investigation that they will be examined on.

  • Component 1 - The Physical Environment

  • Component 2 - The Human Environment

  • Component 3 - Geographical Investigation: Fieldwork Investigation and UK Challenges


We will study in depth the following topics:


Component 1

  • UK Geology.

  • Coastal Landscapes and Processes.

  • River Landscapes and Processes.

  • Weather Hazards and Climate Change.

  • Ecosystems, Biodiversity and Management.

Component 2

  • Changing Cities - Rapid Urbanisation.

  • Global Development - Rapid Development.

  • Resource Management - Energy Management.

Component 3

  • Fieldwork Investigations - River Study and Regeneration Study

  • UK Challenges.

Assessment

Component 1: 1 hour and 30 minutes 37.5% of the qualification

Component 2: 1 hour and 30 minutes, 37.5% of the qualification

Component 3: 1 hour and 30 minutes, 25% of the qualification
