Students will have the opportunity in Science to learn about the fundamental building blocks of life and the universe through studying different aspects of Biology, Chemistry and Physics throughout KS3.
The Science curriculum aims to give all pupils a strong understanding of the world around them whilst acquiring specific skills and knowledge to help them think scientifically, gain an understanding of scientific processes and also an understanding of the uses and implications of Science today and in the future.
We want our pupils to develop an understanding of natural phenomena and to stimulate their curiosity in finding out why things happen in the way they do.
Through the Science curriculum we want pupils at Cleeve Meadow:
● to develop and interest and curiosity in the world around them
● to develop critical thinking and problem solving skills
● to learn to make observations and draw conclusions from them
● to build confidence and build a sense of their place and responsibilities in the world
● to develop practical skills
● to be able to pose questions, plan and test out theories
● to make independent and well-founded decisions
By the time they leave Cleeve Meadow, pupils will have gained key knowledge and skills in the three main areas of the Science curriculum: biology, chemistry and physics, meeting many aspects of the National Curriculum;
Pupils will develop an understanding of the nature, processes and methods of science through different types of science enquiries that help them to answer scientific questions about the world around them.
Learners not only acquire the appropriate knowledge linked to the science curriculum, but also skills which equip them to progress from their starting points, and within their everyday lives.
All learners will also have acquired:
A wider variety of skills linked to both scientific knowledge and understanding, and scientific enquiry/investigative skills.
A richer vocabulary which will enable them to articulate their understanding of taught concepts.
KS4 Science
At Cleeve Meadow School we aim to provide an interesting, challenging and vocationally relevant Science curriculum that offers our students the chance to develop their existing knowledge of Science matters from KS3 by applying it to real world scenarios
We want our students to become:
● Able to raise awareness of environmental issues and concerns; identifying the differences between renewable and non-renewable energy sources, and understanding the responsibilities they have in trying to reduce energy wastage both at home and in school.
● .Aware of the common hazard symbols on products and be able to identify dangers within their environment, with particular emphasis on fire safety and prevention.
KS4 goals
To obtain a nationally recognised qualification in Science (WJEC Entry Level Certificate in Science Today)
Students will be working on three separate units for the first year of study
1) Health and Safety - understanding hazards and dangers, and correct use of fire extinguishers.
2) Renewable Energy - understanding the different forms of energy and understanding the ever-increasing demand for energy
3) Use of Energy at Home and in the Workplace - how to identify and reduce energy waste at home and at school.
To undertake initial baseline assessments for every year group to embed a suitable starting point so that progress can be measured and targets can be clear and meaningful.
To increase independence in studying, to allow the students to take ownership of their skill set and build in regular opportunities for them to show other teachers how to do things.
To ensure verbal feedback to students is relevant and understandable, to encourage the concept of the ‘paperless’ subject for ease of use and environmental reasons.
To find opportunities to work remotely with other schools with similar cohorts
To arrange visits from professionals to talk about how they use science in their working lives
