The aim of RE at Cleeve Meadow is to give students knowledge about the 6 main religions in the UK, to create tolerance and respect to people and communities different to their own, learning from and about religion, so that they can understand the world around them. To provide opportunities to reflect on and discuss their own ideas and beliefs about religion/ faith and to celebrate the diversity of our local and national communities.
RE plays an important role in promoting social awareness and understanding in our students. We encourage students to ask questions about the world and to reflect on their own beliefs, values and experiences and traditions.
It is our aim that the curriculum will create curiosity in students to learn about different cultures and societies that will be build tolerance and understanding that students will carry into their future life.
The schemes are taken and adapted from the Bexley Agreed syllabus, boh KS2 and KS. This ensures that students gain a good ground knowledge of the beliefs and practices of the 6 religions, as well as looking in more depth at specific characteristics and practices of the religions, including looking at how the faith impacts on a believer's life in the UK.
The schemes are designed to encourage students to carry out investigations and research into the religions and topics covered, which supports them to develop independent learning strategies and to take responsibility for their own learning.
The entry level qualification provides students with a platform to consolidate their learning from KS3 and build towards a more robust understanding of the impact of religion on individuals and its importance in communities.
Students are supported to develop their understanding in the following key areas:
● Places of worship
● Religious festivals and celebrations
● Important ceremonies in life and death
● Prejudice and discrimination against people and religions
The course aims also to develop students' respect and tolerance and understanding of the world around them and to celebrate the rich diversity in the UK.
Students are empowered to use independent learning and investigation to support their learning in other topics such as SMSC and independent living.
Assessment
Students build a portfolio of evidence for the 4 key areas of the course outlined above through research, presentations, written evidence and recordings. Evidence is internally assessed and externally verified.
