History

Curriculum Intent

We want our children to see History as relevant to their lives. Our aim is that we stimulate our children’s interest in and understanding about the lives of people who lived in the past. We want our children to understand how their own lives, and the lives of their families, have been directly shaped by the history they are learning about at Cleeve Meadow.

The History curriculum at Cleeve Meadow aims to equip students with important skills they can use both now and in the future. Our curriculum provides children with opportunities to develop their investigative skills, to ask questions, to think critically, to evaluate evidence, and to develop perspective and sound judgement.

We teach children a sense of chronology, in order to develop an understanding of their historical heritage as well as an appreciation of how things have changed over time. We aim to make our children aware of the actions of important people in history and significant events in British and world history and for them to reflect about the impact that these have had on their own lives. Our curriculum also provides an opportunity for them to explore their own personal history as well as the history of their local area, and to place these in a wider historical context.

We recognise the important role that History plays in increasing our students’ understanding about how they can be a good and responsible citizen. Our curriculum aims to ensure our children understand how Britain developed as a society. We see History as crucial in broadening children's horizons, challenging preconceived ideas and ensuring each student values their own and other people’s cultures in modern multicultural Britain. Through the teaching of History, we endeavour to teach children to understand the complexity of people’s lives, the diversity of societies and the challenges of past and present times.

The Key Stage 3 History curriculum at Cleeve Meadow has been planned to ensure that our students are provided with secure knowledge and skills, so that they can move on and succeed in Entry Level History at Key Stage 4.

KS4 Course - GCSE

Students will be working towards an OCR Entry Level 2 and 3 Certificate in History.

The course will encourage students to:

  • develop and extend their knowledge and understanding of specified key events, periods and societies in local, British and wider world history

  • develop and extend their knowledge of the wide diversity of human experience

  • engage in historical enquiry to further develop as independent learners and as critical and reflective thinkers

  • further develop their ability to ask relevant questions about the past, to investigate issues critically and to make valid historical claims by using a range of sources in historical context

  • further develop an awareness of why people, events and developments have been accorded historical significance and how

  • and why different interpretations have been constructed about them

  • organise and communicate their historical knowledge and understanding in different ways and reach substantiated conclusions.

To achieve the OCR’s Entry Level Certificate students must complete all three tasks which make up 100% of the assessment.
