Why is it important?

How the brain manages stress is a normal part of our biology. Humans have evolved to react to stress in different ways in order to survive. A little bit of stress can be helpful.

In fact we all will have a little bit of stress in our everyday lives - running late, got a deadline to meet, can’t get everyone ready quickly in the morning, feeling excited about meeting up with an old friend, going on a trip - these are all things which trigger stress.

In most cases we use the extra boost of energy that gives us to get the task done.

However, sometimes stress can seem too much and we need our brains to help us feel safe during these challenging times.

Everybody, both children and adults, experiences stressful times at some point in their lives.

Some stressors are big, some are small. Some stresses are caused by underlying difficulties like autism. Some stresses are caused by traumatic life events. Some events are stressful for some and not for others.

Either way, what we all have in common is that we all experience it.

Looking after our wellbeing helps us to manage our levels of stress.

When we feel good it is easier to have positive relationships, get on with tasks and learn new things.
