Plastic pollution causes harm to humans, animals, and plants through toxic pollutants. It can take hundreds or even thousands of years for plastic to break down so the environmental damage is long-lasting. So that's why I want to raise and awareness about the dangers of plastic waste in the environment through painting.
SMART GOALS
Sustainable: I'm raising awareness about plastic waste through painting because people need to know about the dangers of plastic waste in the environment.
Measurable: I have succeeded when people are interested and inspired by my painting.
Attainable: I have to make the painting easy to understand and make it look cool.
Relevant: My goal is relevant because the painting is about the problem.
Time-Based: Right now.
What was your process when identifying your users?
I surveyed plastic and how to reduce the use of plastic, I asked do they care and recycle their plastic and I also asked about what plastic packaging annoyed them the most. Some responses were really good and they helped me with my project but some were just for fun and responded badly. I also interviewed Ms. Imesh about what art style is good for raising awareness, I asked her a bunch of questions like what color is good, what art style is understandable, and how to make sure the art is great.
How challenging has it been to get in touch with your users? Or to decide which users to contact?
It was easy to interview Ms. Imesh because she responds fast and answers well. The survey was good as well, some people explained it clearly and detailed but some weren’t, so overall the survey was a success. The interview with ms. imesh mostly talked about the art style and color that’s good for raising awareness painting, the interview went well but some answers trigger me to research more.
What is one unique insight that you learned from speaking to your users?
The unique insight that I got from the survey was about how to reduce the use of plastic and the effectiveness of an art campaign. However, what I got from the interview was different because it's about how to make the art interesting and easy to understand.
Did your interviews change your perspective on the challenge? Was it hard to check your own bias at the door?
It didn't change my perspective on my challenge because I already know how to make my campaign without any research.
How else might you gain empathy for your users? How might this experience be different if it was not taking place during a pandemic?
To make people interested in my campaign, I made my art and posters interesting. If it wasn't during the pandemic I would make banners and brochures to also make people interested.
How have you reframed your "How might we question"?
My concern is about plastic pollution because I saw a lot of news and youtube videos about how plastic can affect the environment and can potentially destroy our earth if we keep polluting it. So I made this art campaign to start awareness about plastic waste in the environment and how dangerous it is to our environment.
Does your HMW question reflect your users’ needs?
Yes, because plastic is really dangerous and if we keep using it, our environment will be damaged if we keep ignoring it. So to make people start realizing that plastic is dangerous, an art campaign is good at explaining it because without words people can still understand by just looking at it, and if more and more people are realizing they can start the action and make the world a better place.
Quick brainstorm: What might be two possible solutions?
Painting as a campaign and a tote bag, why? Because on the tote bag there are paintings of plastic awareness on it, so when you go shopping or go to work people can look at the bag and maybe realize that plastic is a dangerous and harmful thing if we keep ignoring it. If this works I will make a website about the dangers of plastic and the solutions to reduce plastic waste.
What is one thing that is currently causing you to stress about your project?
The presentation, because I have to explain my project in detail (the idea, the process, and the result) and make the presentation look interesting so people won’t get bored of it.
The first painting is about how the environment can change when we use too much plastic, it makes the beaches and other places really dirty and polluted. The second painting is about how the fish can be affected by plastic, they think plastic is their food and it makes them eat more and more until they die because of starvation. The 3rd painting is about how the earth can be covered by plastic if we keep using it too much. As part of the campaign, the painting is transformed into a tote bag for daily use.
People can buy my bag through pre-order but there is only 6 slots and the price will be 45.000 Rp. The benefit of buying the tote bag is because it spreads awareness to a lot of people, if a person sees the bag, maybe they will realize the dangers of plastic in the world and maybe start doing an action.
