The constant use of plastic bags are leading our environment to multiple issues; floods, air and water pollution, and it's endangering the animals around us.
S(specific): Raise awareness for people to use less plastic bag, by produce a tote bag that will replace the use of one-time plastic bags; all of which will be using my designs.
M(measurable): 5 to 10 people purchase the bags and are willing to help the earth.
A(attainable): I believe it's possible for me to create and design illustrations for the bag, seeing that it's something that i already do very often. but it's challenging to print it onto the bags, because this is my first time doing so.
R (relevant): With less use of plastics bags, people will be aware about this problem, and use little to no one-time-use bags. hopefully, other's will find the designs interesting and feel the need to purchase one.
T(time-based): The tote bags will be ready by march 20th and will be sold on april 1st.
My users are teenagers and adults of all genders, most people I know who are around that age enjoy shopping by themselves, and for themselves. Despite this, there are still a lot of people who regularly use plastic bags, whether it’s for shopping or keeping their belongings, including my family. I feel that if I offered them a different option, it would help decrease the amount of plastic they use.
When I first started this project first, I considered making a clothing line, where I'd create designs and illustrations and my mom would help me find a taylor to sew them. But since I started a bit late, I figured that making a clothing line would take too much time, seeing that you had to carefully choose out the fabric material and wait for samples, added to the fact that clothes can take quite a while to sew.
There were times when i'd go to my cousin's house every week, and while driving there I'd always see plastic waste every where, most of which were plastic bags. To be frank, I felt a bit upset with what I saw. Some time later I figured that this project could be used to address a bigger issue, so I chose to make reusable tote bags.
The process began with creating and illustrating designs for the bags. The process itself wasn't too difficult, although there were times where I lost the motivation to draw or became too lazy to continue. There was a lot of trial and error, but eventually they did get finished.
Whilst creating the designs, my mother and I were also choosing out shops to create and print the bags. We had to choose between using biodegradable fabric(which we have to sew ourselves,) and directly printing on an already-made bag. At first, I was leaning more towards the biodegradable fabric, but since it would take up too much time to sew, it was decided that it would be better to get them printed instead.
The first drawing I made(on the right,) was one that I spent a lot of time on, especially with adding details. I usually start my drawings by doodling different shapes, you can see that I drew many weird shapes. Ever since I began properly learning to draw, I've learnt that it's more fun if you let loose, especially because I was focusing on watercolor. I also really liked the concept of being simple, that's why the colors are a bit limited.
On the left, we have my second drawing. This drawing was pretty rushed, because I actually had another design similar to the first one, though unfortunately, a relative accidentally deleted the file, so I had to improvise and make a quick sketch. Lately I've been reading mangas, so that's sort of what the concept is. I nearly scratched this idea, mainly because my art style(when it comes to human anatomy,) leans more towards realism, and manga designs tend to be more "cartoon-ishy". I spoke to my mother about it, and according to her it'd be unique to have a design like this(part realism, part manga), so I ended up using it in the end.
Situation: Global warming and plastic pollution is worsening every day, the level of floods have become much higher than they previously were, and climate change is slowly destroying the Earth. This is all occurring because of the amount of plastic we use. The procedure of making plastic uses a lot of energy and material from the earth, as well as it produces a vast amount of air pollution (greenhouse gasses).
Plastic can take decades to decompose, which means that it sticks around much longer than organic materials. Chlorinated plastic contains harmful chemicals, and can potentially seep into soil, transfer to groundwater or other surrounding ecosystems, this harms both us and the environment.
Task: If there was an alternative that does not harm the earth, and can be reused many times, people will switch to using this eco-friendly option, thus reducing the use of plastic bags.
Action: That's why I created TOTE BAG-ISM, the bags are made with a canvas fabric, one that isn't easily torn when used. it's a good alternative to one-time use bags, and can be washed whenever.
Result: By using this movement and selling these bags, people will understand the danger plastic bags will bring to our planet. I hope that this project can bring more awareness to this issue.
Although I'm sure that many people know about this issue, there are a few who are rather ignorant, and choose to brush it off. I'm hoping that this project can change how they think.
