Welcome, I am Ms Lothian and I am the Head of Religious Studies here at CHS. Please start with the audio recording here to understand more about why you should consider RS as a fantastic option at GCSE!
As the largest religion in the UK (and the world!), we are required by the exam board to study Christianity. When we take a moment to consider the extent to which Christianity continues to influence our culture; from our laws, to our holidays, to the very language we use, it makes sense that we seek to better our understanding of this highly influential religion.
We have the option to study one religion alongside Christianity. We have chosen to study Buddhism as it is so different to Christianity, it provides a fascinating contrast. We have found that our students relish the opportunity to learn more about this Eastern, godless, religion which is rapidly growing here in the West. From meditation practice to Buddhist philosophy, the presence of Buddhism in our lives is ever growing here in the UK and there is much to be learnt both about, and from, this tradition.
No.
Your assessment will take the form of two exams on two different days at the end of Year 11. See the slides above for more details.
Absolutely. If you decide the GCSE isn't for you, don't panic! You can always return to RS at A-Level. Every year we have a number of students successfully complete their RS A-Level without RS at GCSE.
This said, to have the GCSE will give you a firm grounding and a stronger platform upon which to build your A-Level study. So, it's not a problem at A-Level if you don't have RS at GCSE, but it could be helpful to you if you did.
Have a look at this website to get an idea of the huge variety of different possibilities that open up to you with a GCSE in RS.
The three stories to the left are just a few of many examples.
