Welcome, I am Andrew Pettitt and I am the Director of Music here at CHS. Please start with the audio recording here to understand more about why you should consider Music at GCSE.
"The variety of the lessons makes every lesson interesting......"
"I feel that my ability to think creatively and solve problems has really improved...."
"I am able to compose in an original way and I can't wait to hear my composition performed live...."
"Listen to as much music as possible that is unfamiliar so you get used to analysing different styles of music..."
"Practise your instrument as much as possible!"
Do I need to have a passion for performing on an instrument or voice?
Performing on an instrument doesn't necessarily need to be your main passion and reason for taking GCSE Music but you will need to be around a minimum of a Grade 2/3 standard by the time you start the course with a view to taking further grades as you progress through the course.
Are there any GCSE requirements?
Ideally pupils should have taken Music in Year 9 to have an understanding of analysis and composition however if you're a strong performer with a good understanding of theory then get in touch.
What kind of music do I have to compose?
The two main compositions for the coursework is a theme and variation composition and popular music composition.
What opportunities are there at CHS to help me progress as a musician outside of the classroom?
An extensive Co-curricular programme to suit all tastes!
Opportunities to see live performances of all styles and repertoire at venues such as the Bridgewater Hall and The Lowry.
The chance to have instrumental or vocal lessons with our visiting music teacher team.
