Welcome, I am Olivia Spencer and I am the Head of Department of the HPQ here at CHS. Please watch the short presentation below to understand more about why you should consider the HPQ.
The topic I chose for my HPQ was research of memory. I chose this topic because I have had a passion for psychology and memory since I was young. I have always been intrigued about how we remember things and why we remember things. Personally, the HPQ is an opportunity to research something in depth that I will not learn in the curriculum. Another thing that motivated me to do the HPQ is that I gain ½ a GCSE by completing the HPQ (Joab).
When it was first announced students at Cheadle Hulme School could partake in the HPQ topic; I knew it was something that I had to do. The project in its entirety excited me. Firstly, it occurred to me that I could put my skills in essay based subjects to use. English, History and RS are subjects I love and have consequently taken for GCSE, the HPQ will be a perfect time to broadcast these writing skills. These three subjects and the HPQ go hand in hand, therefore not only will my skills from lessons translate to the HPQ, the skills I pick up whilst doing the HPQ can also help me throughout my GCSE years. Not only did the prospect of utilising my skills delight me but also the freedom of the project. The HPQ is an astounding opportunity to put time and effort into researching an area that already interests you. As soon as the project was explained to me, I knew what I wanted to do.
Since I was able to remember, I have had a passionate interest surrounding the secretive world that is North Korea. The dictatorship had always blew my mind. Moreover, I had been awaiting an opening like the HPQ for my chance to research further into the depth and mystery of the democratic People’s Republic. I am so grateful to have had the chance to conduct all this research and the love I have for my chosen topic has made the research feel less like work and more like something I cannot wait to do. With research often leaving me desperate to know more.
Furthermore, a huge dream of mine is to become a human rights lawyer. This project has propelled me and helped me on my way to achieving this dream. The skills I have collated and the research I have completed into human rights and inequality will provide the perfect background for me: not only in the long term but also in some of my GCSE subjects e.g. Religious Studies (Mara).
This qualification develops your independent research skills which is an excellent platform for the Sixth Form study.
