The purpose of the PA is to assure the Scholar, the employing school, and the EPP that the Scholar is ready for the clinical semester. The PA is the “next to the last step” and signifies CESA 7’s commitment to highly qualified teacher candidates. The PA validates a Scholar’s readiness for student teaching by examining selected components of the teaching act that Scholars collect in a personal portfolio as selected applications of their pedagogical knowledge.
The PKA is typically associated with the scholar's current teaching assignment and is used to assess the scholar's pedagogical knowledge & application of the instructional cycle.
The components of that cycle are shown in the graphic and include:
Planning for Instruction
Instruction
Assessment of Student Learning
Adjustment of Instruction (to ensure student learning)
Pre-Observation
The first step in the PKA process is preparation for the observation. The scholar completes sections 1-3 of the PKA document and submits it to the Teacher-Coach for evaluation.
The Teacher-Coach reviews the document, grades it, and returns it to the scholar for correction.
Observation
The Teacher-Coach then observes the scholar implementing those first three stages of the instructional cycle as described in sections 1-3 of the document. They also use that observation to complete the pre-clinical observation form for the scholar.
Post-Observation
After the observation the scholar completes sections four and five of the document, reflecting on what they would do to adjust the instruction to cause students to learn. They also reflect on what worked/didn't work and what they might do differently.
