Determining a Student's Level of Service
Direct Related Service versus Consultation When developing the IEP, it is important to understand the difference between direct service, consultation, and collaboration. This is especially true for related services (also known as designated instruction and services or DIS). Direct service and consultation are both delivery models, whereas collaboration is one method often used in providing consultation.
Direct Related Service
For a service to be considered a "direct" service to the student, it must be:
1. Individual, small group, or "push in" instruction;
2. Provided through face-to-face interaction with the student, which can be virtual;
3. In a regular and ongoing manner; and
4. Based upon specific IEP goals and objectives that are monitored and up-dated through data collection.
Direct services are listed on the special education and related services page of the IEP.
