Curriculum Intent
The philosophy, ethics and theology department at Cedars Upper School is dedicated to helping students explore and understand the world around them as well as enabling them to develop their own personal identity. We aim to deepen their knowledge and understanding of different philosophies and theologies. We primarily look at Christian theology at A-Level and GCSE but also study Buddhism at KS4 through a GCSE in Religious Studies. At KS3 we look at many religious and world beliefs about current social issues. In a world where our young people are bombarded by second hand opinions it is vital they learn how to study issues, consider different viewpoints and use evidence to form their own opinions and through this we aim to develop their extended writing and debate skills.
We want our students:
To be able to consider other’s points of view and approach these issues creatively through critical thinking, using logic and reasoning to understand beliefs and reach conclusions·
To be inspired and engaged by our curriculum
To be determined in their stand against discrimination and injustice
To be exposed to a range of aspirational career options.
To develop the skills they need to have difficult conversations and debate respectfully
To be successful in forming their own opinions and beliefs and know why they hold them
Five top tips for success in subject:
Learn keywords and definitions
Have key quotations that can link to a number of topics and you can recall easily
Practice exam questions
Consider different viewpoints for each issue studied and have a reasoned opinion on these
Consolidate your learning as you go to create useful revision tools
