Curriculum Intent
The MFL curriculum provides an opening to other cultures, deepens students’ understanding of the world and promotes global citizenship. Language-learning takes them out of their comfort zone and fosters new ways of thinking. Students learn to understand and respond to spoken and written language from a variety of sources, including works of literature. They practise the language in a variety of ways, such as role plays, group work, media presentations and creative simulations. Through regular interaction with our Foreign Language Assistants, students speak with increasing confidence and fluency. GCSE language students are offered the opportunity to visit the target-language country in order to experience the culture first-hand, to practise their language skills and to develop their self-confidence. Ultimately, our students will be able to use their language(s) to communicate with others, whether they are visiting the target-language country for leisure, to study or to work. Learning one foreign language equips them to learn further Languages and gives them an advantage in the labour market.
Five top tips for success in subject:
Make sure that you keep up to date, otherwise it's hard to catch up. Language builds upon itself, so any gaps are going to make it more difficult for you to understand what comes after.
Record your answers to speaking questions on your phone and listen to them regularly - on your way to school, in the car, to help you fall asleep!
Have a study buddy and practise your speaking answers whenever you're together.
Watch Netflix - there are lots of French/German/Spanish series available or you could simply change the language on your favourite series.
Listen to French/German/Spanish music - it subconsciously helps you to learn language in an enjoyable way; you don't actually have to try - you naturally get accustomed to the sounds of the words.
