PHYSICAL EDUCATION (1 Credit REQUIRED)

PHYSICAL EDUCATION  (6107)

1 credit; 1 semester

Each student will be given the opportunity to utilize the basic skills of Physical Education, but emphasis is placed on overall wellness and recreational activities. Topics will include: Principles of Fitness, Target Heart Rate, Anaerobic vs. Aerobic, Emergency Situations and the musculoskeletal system. Grading in the class is performance based.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION 10-12 (6115)

1 credit; 1 semester

Physical Education is a course designed to develop the changing physical and social aspects of the young adult student. Students are provided with activities that will further develop the fundamentals of team and individual sports, which include skills, rules and game strategy. Emphasis in the program is placed on providing an opportunity for continued individual growth and success. Activities are designed to help the individual improve their overall physical fitness. 

TEAM SPORTS (6122)

1 credit; 1 semester

This class is designed for students interested in learning skills and strategies of team sports.  This course will include daily skill instruction and implementation of those skills into a competitive game setting.  Sports may include, but are not limited to:  basketball, flag football, soccer, ultimate frisbee, pickleball, badminton, and volleyball.  This course will also include daily cardiovascular fitness. 

WALK-FIT (6140)

1 credit; 1 semester

Walk Fit is a physical education option if individual and team games are not interesting. The Walk Fit course is designed to help students develop a healthy lifestyle by using walking as a form of physical activity. Students will walk everyday in class for the entire class period. The class will walk together as a group with the instructor setting the pace. The walking course will vary depending on the day and the weather outside. The class will walk outside unless the weather is uncooperative. The instructor will make the decision to stay inside. A steady rain, freezing temperatures and snow will be the only reason the class will not venture outside. Students need to be prepared to go outside, so jackets, hats and gloves need to be ready as the weather changes. If the class must be inside, students will be walking around the gym, or the instructor will find an alternate activity for the period.

CARDIO-FIT  (6150)

1 credit; 1 semester

Cardio-Fit is a physical education department option if individual and team games are not for you. This class combines cardiovascular activity with strength and body core exercise.

The objectives will be focused on the components of physical fitness, both health and skill relates, such as cardiovascular health and body composition, but including speed, agility and balance.

LIFE SPORTS (6220)

1 credit; 1 semester

This course is designed to develop a desire to remain active throughout the student’s life. The objectives of the course are to encourage participation, develop a knowledge of rules, strategies, and common courtesies of the sports. This course has limited enrollment.

FITNESS & WEIGHTS (6313)

1 credit; 1 semester

The emphasis in this course is on muscular strength, endurance, flexibility, and safety. The core lifts in this course include parallel squats, power and hanging cleans, bench press, and incline press. Weight room safety, warm-up/cool-down procedures, lifting technique and safety for all lifts, major muscle identification, and individual goal setting are all important components in this course. In addition, students will monitor and improve their fitness levels by participating in the Fitnessgram assessments throughout the semester.

WOMEN'S FITNESS (6335)

1 credit; 1 semester

This course will provide female students with a well-rounded fitness routine designed to meet the special needs of women. Nutritional guidelines and information, aerobic conditioning, weight and free weight resistance training, flexibility and stretching techniques will be included in the course content. 

HEALTH (1 Credit REQUIRED)

HEALTH (6510)

1 credit; 1 semester

This course covers the three aspects of health: mental, physical and social health. In our mental health unit topics include discussions on wellness, stress, mental disorders and decision making. For physical health we emphasize disease prevention, nutrition and exercise. Our social health unit stresses relationships, dating, drug abuse, and our sex ed. curriculum. Various professionals from our community speak with our students about these topics.

BEGINNING JUDO (6125)

BEGINNING GIRLS JUDO (6126)

2 credit; 2 semesters

This course is focused on the development of beginning level ground and throwing skills. Proper safety and falling techniques will be taught in addition to te rules of judo, its history, culture, and philosophy, and in-depth strategies to execute proper techniques. Ukemi, newaza and tachi waza techniques will all be covered.

PE 111O  OUTDOOR ADVENTURE (6225)

1 credit; 1 semester

This course introduces the students to a variety of outdoor adventure sports. During the semester, students will be exposed to sea kayaking, sailing, whitewater rafting, hiking, rock climbing, snow shoeing, cross country skiing, and seasonal activities. Students will learn the very basics of each of these lifetime sports and hopefully pursue them in the future.

PE 110J JOGGING & POWERWALKING (6226)

1 credit; 1 semester

This course introduces the lifetime fitness activity of jogging/power walking. This course includes aerobic jogging/walking at a brisk, powerful pace using all of the major muscle groups in the upper and lower body simultaneously, resulting in a complete aerobic workout. Jogging/walking with power will help students achieve a high overall fitness level when done correctly for the proper amount of time.

ADVANCED FITNESS & WEIGHTS (6333)

1 credit; 1 semester

The goal of this course is to teach a variety of skills and techniques of resistance training to enhance strength, speed, power, flexibility, mental fitness and overall conditioning of the student. The course will address health-related fitness components of: Body Composition, Muscular Strength, Muscular Endurance, Flexibility and Cardiovascular Endurance. The course will also address Skill-related Fitness components of: Speed, Power, Agility, Balance, Reaction time and Coordination. Students will be able to identify muscles used during fitness activities and proper nutrition to lead a healthy lifestyle.

FIRST AID (6520)

1 credit; 1 semester

This course provides a basic overview of the causes and preventions of unintentional injuries, appropriate emergency responses to those injuries and crisis response planning. Safety education should include cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and the use of an automatic external defibrillator (AED), first aid for obstructed airway, and injury prevention.

ATHLETIC TRAINING (6525)

1 credit; 1 semester

This course will provide students with a broad look into the athletic training profession. The class will begin to prepare students for careers in allied healthcare – specifically athletic training and physical therapy. Topics addressed will include, but are not limited to: the prevention, evaluation, treatment and rehabilitation of athletic injury as well as first aid and CPR and the professional responsibilities of an allied health provider.
