What is Seam in Apparel?
A seam is defined as a line over where two or more fabrics are superimposed over each other. A seam may also contain the row or rows of stitching threads used to superimpose the fabrics. A seam maintains some properties which produce an accurate seam for the garments. The seam is an important thing in the garments manufacturing industry. Different characteristics of the seam are discussed in this article.
Characteristics of Well-made Seam:
The seam used in garments will be more perfect if it maintains some properties. Those properties are mentioned in the following:
Perfect fabric joints,
No Missed or Uneven stitches,
No fabric damage during sewing,
Achievement of strength, elasticity, Durability, security, and comfort,
Comfortable during using the garments.
All the above properties have been discussed below:
1. Perfect fabric joints:
A Perfect fabric joint is one of the most important properties of a seam which helps to make a seam perfect. It’s also an important issue in seaming. Sometimes it’s seen that the fabric joint is not accurate and contains fabric edge opened. So, to get a perfect seam, a perfect fabric joint is a must.
2. No missed or Uneven stitches:
Sometimes stitches are missing out or produced uneven stitches during seaming, which creates a faulty seam or weak seam. So, during seaming, it should be followed carefully.
3. No fabric damage during sewing:
Fabric damage-free seam is another important characteristic of the seam. During seaming, fabric damage occurred frequently which helps to produce a faulty seam. So, seaming should be done very carefully so that it can’t damage the fabric.
4. Achievement of strength, elasticity, durability, security, and comfort:
Achievement of strength, elasticity, Durability, security, and comfort are the most important properties of the seam which help to produce a perfect seam.
5. Comfortable during using the garments:
Seaming should be done in that way so that it can produce comfortability during using the garments. It’s one of the important properties of the seam.
HOW TO SEW A PERFECT SEAM
When a seam will be noticeable, you may want to sew it as straight as possible. This article shows you how to sew difficult seams when ordinary methods fail
The first choice, in machine sewing a seam, is to align the edge of the fabric on the seam guide plate or the presser foot.
When sewing a difficult seam create a line on the fabric and sew on the line instead of aligning the the fabric on the seam guide plate or the presser foot.
Use this method if the seam will be very close to the fabric edge, if you are not very skilled, or if the fabric is very thick or uneven.
Step 3
To sew a seam directly on a line, make a line with either a ball point pen or wax pencil. The line made by chalk will be wider and more irregular than the wax pencil The ball point pen makes a durable and fine line. Use the wax pencil on fine or smooth fabrics only when sewing directly over the line, because with coarse fabrics the line will be blotchy. With a wax pencil always keep the point small to make a fine line.
Use chalk and a straight edge to make a line but do not sew on the line. Instead sew on the edge of the chalk markings. This method can be done with a wax pencil on rough fabrics. Since chalk is not durable, handle the fabric with care.
Before starting, you must:
Have excellent lighting: overhead lighting, the light from the sewing machine and a table lamp.
Measure
Iron and allow the fabric dry.
Pin, baste, pin and baste, or double baste depending on what is needed.
Test removing the wax or ink. Use undiluted rubbing alcohol and on a dry fabric only. After working the rubbing alcohol, into the fabric, rinse the alcohol out by placing it under running water.
Have some sewing skills by practicing on easier projects.
Apply this to sewing curves.
