Preparing the Materials for Cutting
Fabric preparation is an important step of sewing. Making the fabric grain perfect before sewing cutting will preserve the fit of the finished garment after washing. Preparing the fabric before cutting involves three important steps as follows:

1. Straightening fabric end
fabrics are purchased either torn from the bolt or cut from bolt. If cut from bolt, fabric ends need to be straightened by either tearing the material or pulling the thread. However, fabrics torn from bolt are straight.

2. Straitening the fabric grain
sometimes a fabric becomes off-grain when it is pulled in finished process or when torn from the bolt by the salesperson. Hence, the fabric needs to be pulled back into shape to make it grain perfect again. In doing this, hold the material diagonally on corners and along sides. Stretch and pull gently but firmly until the cut edges and selvages are even when the material is folded lengthwise or half.

3. Shrinking and soaking
if the fabric is not pre-shrunk, shrink this after its selvage and fabric grain straightened. Fold the fabric loosely to approximately 8 inches square and immerse in warm water from 30 to 60 minutes. Drain the folded fabric lengthwise over the clothesline to dry. Do jot wring , because the fabric will be off-grain again and will become wrinkled. Press the fabric on lengthwise grain if it is wrinkled.
Before the fabric is cut, a trial layout of all pattern pieces should be made for the following reasons:
1. Make sure that all units will cut correctly as to the grain and design of cloth;
2. To see if the material is adequate enough and;
3. To prevent waste of the material.
