Types of Measurements
The horizontal measurement is taken from the left of the figure to the right.
The circumferential measurement is taken around the body.
The vertical measurement is taken from the top of the body figure to its base.
Horizontal Measurements
Shoulder
Shoulder is measured from one shoulder tip across to another shoulder tip.
Vertical Measurements
Front length
This is measured from the highest point of the shoulder (neck shoulder) to the desired hemline/desired length.
Let the person sit on the chair. Bring the tape measure from the side waist down to the top of the chair.
This measurement is generally only important for pants and leotards.
Pants length
This is measured from the side waist down to the desired length.
Sleeve length
It is measured from the shoulder tip point, down to the desired length of the sleeve.
Circumferential Measurements
Breast
This is taken around the fullest part of the breast, inserting 3 fingers in the tape for allowance.
Hips
It is measured around the fullest part of the hips. Use the second hip or the protruding part of hip when getting this measurement.
Waist
This is taken around the natural waistline. Insert 1-2 fingers for ease or allowance.
Armhole
This is measured around the arm joint with allowance (refer to illustration).
Arm girth
It is a measurement taken around the arm 8-9 inches from the shoulder tip.
Knee
This is measured around the knee with the knee slightly flexed/bend.
Neck
Measure around the base of your neck.
Thigh
It is measured around the leg/thigh 3 inches below the crotch line.
