1.1. Measuring Tools

1. Tape Measure

- A flexible sewing tape measure usually measures about 60 inches long and 5/8 inches wide. It is generally reversible with inches on one side and centimeters on the other to help make a more accurate measurement. The flexible material will not stretch, and can easily be rolled up when not in use.

2. Yardstick

• A yardstick is a smooth, shellacked hardwood or metal. It is used for marking hemlines and checking grainlines when laying out patterns.

3. Ruler

- Rulers usually come in 12″ or 18″ lengths and are used for general markings such as straight lines.

4. Seam Gauge

- A seam gauge is a small ruler about 6″ long with a sliding marker. It has inches on one edge and centimeters on the other edge. It is a great tool to help make accurate measurements for seam allowances, hems, pleats, buttonholes, and various alterations.

5. L- Square

• The Tailor's square or "L" is used to transfer measurements to draft the pattern. It also divides the garment into the desired measurement. It has perfect squares and is useful in making straight lines and number. It can also function as a tape measure.

• It has two arms connected perpendicularly

a. The longer arm is twenty-four (24) inches long.

b. The shorter arm is fourteen (14) inches long.

6. French Curve

• This is used to shape the depth of the neck hole and armhole of the pattern.
