Summary
One of the issues that faces educators today is finding teaching methods that incorporate many different styles of learning. According to Howard Gardner and his theory of multiple intelligences, “there is no single intelligence, but rather distinct, independent multiple intelligences exist, each representing unique skills and talents relevant to a certain category.” Every person has different strengths and weaknesses in different content areas. Some students are better in certain areas than others and vice versa. Each student learns in a different way and, therefore, teachers need to incorporate different learning experiences. For the first deliverable, my case study shows how the students developmental stages affect how they learn and what ways they learn best. The second deliverable is a knowledge construction mind map. The mind map explores prioritization and how it can be used in many different areas. The third deliverable is my research project. In this project a study was conducted to determine how effective different teaching strategies were on learning. The fourth deliverable is reciprocal teaching. Reciprocal teaching is one strategy we used in class and one that was in my field project. Reciprocal teaching is a way to engage students in learning. The fifth deliverable is a Socratic seminar. Socratic seminars are a good way to help students develop social skills. The sixth deliverable is a document-based inquiry. Document based inquiries are a good way to stimulate cognitive development. The different question sets allow for progression of cognitive reasoning.
Essential Question: How can teachers effectively incorporate different teaching methods to appeal to the different intelligences? How would it affect test scores and grade averages?
