Biology '27

My name is Daniel Serpa, and I am currently a freshman at Bucknell University studying Biology. Having grown up on an island, I have been immersed in many diverse ecosystems that populate my hometown. I spent much of my childhood out in nature, whether it be out fishing or traversing through an array of forest trails. Being privy to such unique and pristine natural spaces has given me the opportunity to cherish these environments. Through these experiences, I feel a sense of responsibility to help maintain these areas. For as long as I can remember, I have been fascinated by amphibians, specifically frogs. This childhood curiosity has followed me all the way to college, where I found the Takahashi lab. Being a part of this lab provides an incredible opportunity to further my ecological education in collaboration with other students, and participate in research that allows me to explore the natural world in great detail.

Outside of the classroom, I enjoy playing the violin, more recently becoming a member of the Bucknell Orchestra. I also love to stay active in as many ways as possible; whether it be out running on the trails around Bucknell, vacation hiking trips with my family, or kayaking around the waters around my hometown. In my free time, I enjoy fishing, boating, and spending time with friends and family.

After college, I hope to use my passion for biology and environmental protection to pursue a career in the conservation field. I look forward to participating in the implementation of sustainable and conservation practices to maintain the amazing spaces that I grew up appreciating.
