Amphibian Research Lab @ Bucknell University

Ecology, Ethology & Conservation

Global Connections

About 50% of Bucknell students study abroad before they graduate. STEM majors in general are a little more constrained in their schedules. But it is entirely possible for our Biology and Animal Behavior majors, including pre-med and pre-vet students, to fit a semester-long (or a year in some cases) studying abroad into the schedule. I was once an international student and learned so much about not only the natural world but also the language, cultures, religions, racial issues, and the histories of the United States, through which I have developed new lenses to analyze the world and also gained a greater appreciation for my own country (I left Japan partially because I was sick of some aspects of how my country was/is!). Frankly, losing research students to studying abroad means delays in research progress. But gaining experiences outside of our own society is incomparably more important for our personal growth and development. I encourage my research students, my advisees, and students in Biology and Animal Behavior to study abroad. I am delighted that many of our lab students have been able to do so.
