Takahashi Lab Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Statement

Thanks to Qian Qian Mei (Animal Behavior '22), Christian Baccay (Biochemistry '23), and Maggie Zipfel (Animal Behavior '23) who crafted the statement.

Our lab consists of a group of ecologists and conservation biologists who are concerned about the wellness of the planet and those that inhabit it. We understand that nature and the human condition are inextricable. Just as we know the importance of diversity in nature, we know the importance of diversity among humans.

We recognize that science and diversity, equity, and inclusion cannot be separated and are committed as a lab to further our education regarding DE&I and to cultivate an inclusive environment in the lab and in our daily lives regardless of race, ethnicity, nationality, immigration status, religion, gender identity, gender expression, sexual orientation, age, or ability status. This list is far from exhaustive and we welcome prospective lab members from all backgrounds that are open to encouraging diverse perspectives and ideas.

Further, our lab condemns harassment and discrimination of any kind inside and outside the lab. We will strive to support individuals and minority groups that have often been neglected by society and to support them with the resources they need. As scientists, we recognize that our strength comes from the diversity among ourselves and the diversity of the planet.

We acknowledge that Bucknell sits on the banks of the Susquehanna River that was at the heart of Susquehannock's life. The Susquehannock were matriarchal people who were farmers, fishermen, and traders. As a result of European arrival, the Susquehannock were faced with epidemics, inter-native conflict, and the Paxton Boys Massacre. We, as a group, recognize the disquieting history of the genocide of the Susquehannock people that eventually led to their extinction in 1763 and strive to respect and protect the land and the watershed through our scientific work as well as the active dissemination of the history of this land.

"Native Land Digital is a Canadian not-for-profit organization, incorporated in December 2018. Native Land Digital is Indigenous-led, with an Indigenous Executive Director and Board of Directors who oversee and direct the organization. Numerous non-Indigenous people also contribute as members of our Advisory Council. The Board of Directors govern finances, set priorities, and appoint staff members as required.

Native-Land.ca was created in 2015 by Victor Temprano, a settler hailing from Okanagan territory."
