- THE BRIEF -

To film a short autobiographical project on your phone. You can explore archived footage or recreate footage. the only conditions were it must be autobiographical and at least 50% of it must be filmed using iPhone. Meaning we can use cameras, screen recording and archived footage but sparingly.

My ideas

Upon brainstorming for this project I created a series of potential ideas:

  • a montage of clips to the entrancing music of Dawn - lowercase noises. These clips will consist of key points from my life but not explicitly say anything. It will give clues.

  • Books. I love books, always have and always will. This short would be me talking to strangers about their favourite books.

  • Photography. This would be a short documenting my photography process. I will be taking photos of the most important places in my life. Minimal sound and explanation of what I am doing. Credits will contain all the final photos.

  • my life through film. This would be a short of me talking about my favourite films as they run through a projection.

  • disks to live for - my life through a series of music

After a brief brainstorming session i picked my top three and expanded upon the ideas, trying to gain more of an aesthetic by using certain photos and fonts to create something a little bit like the initial layout of a treatment.

My life through 35mm

This short will be a documentary-style film. It will follow me as I go around my hometown taking photos of all the places I use to go to when I was younger. A lot has changed since those days. I've grown up, I've made new friends, lost contact with old ones. But one thing that hasn't changed is where I live. I walk past those old places every day however the last time I actually walk into them; went down the slide, swung on the swings, walked down the path, climbed that big tree. It's been years. Which is sort of the point of the doc. For me to go back to my childhood and rekindle something that I feel is lost in me.

disks to live for

Music has always been something that mattered to me. My dad was always playing David Bowie, the Stone Roses , and Elton John in the kitchen while cooking and I'd always be there with him to sing those ballads. And looking back on it now it makes me consider all the songs and albums that I think paved the way in my life. This is what this short doc will be about. The songs that helped me during the difficult moments and were never going to leave. Because that's the interesting thing about music. No matter what happens, it will always be there.

A new chapter

I think back to when I was a boy reading books. My favourites were Hitchhiker's guide to the galaxy, a curious incident of the dog in the nighttime, and 1984. And something that always jumps back to me is how iconic they were in the early days of my life. My dad would read the sherlock holmes books to me and I would always have my nose in a book even to this day. This doc would follow me as I covered my favourite books and how I think they've changed my life.
