thE brief

'Carpe diem. Seize the day, boys. Make your lives extraordinary' - Mr Keating, Dead Poets Society

The Brief was quite simple. To Create a short film that encapsulates the feeling of 'coming-of-age'. The script had to be a maximum of 6 pages in length and use conventions of the genre. Everyone would submit one two page outline script and five would be chosen to be turned into a full six page script. We would all be put into five groups that one script assigned to us.

thE iDEAS

I immediately started considering previous coming of age ideas that i had had and how i can modify them to either fit the brief or encompass more of the coming of age genre conventions. I picked three ideas and expanded on them before laying them out in a small treatment to help me pick a concrete idea to work with:

cATALYST

Catalyst is a long-haul project I have been slowly but surely building on since 2018. I developed the idea after falling in love with the 2013 video game Life Is Strange which follows the story of Max, a girl who develops time-traveling abilities who uses them to solve the disappearance of her best friend's girlfriend. The original idea for it was heavily based on the game so I worked a lot on truly making it my own which after countless drafts and reworks I believe it finally is. It follows the story of Chester who, tormented by his survivor's guilt, fixates on solving the disappearance murder of his estranged childhood friend Emily.

As much as i would love to do this script as it has become somewhat for a passion project for me, it just seems to ambitious. The large cast, the multiple locations, the difference in times. It would just be too big of an undertaking even in a small six-page capacity.

sHAMEFUL coMPANY

Very loosely based on the 1970's novel The Outsiders by S.E Hinton. Shameful company tells the story of Wallace and Thom. Two best friends who couldn't be separated no matter what. They both come from backgrounds that although are very different economically and socially, have very similar situations: neglectful father, entrapped Mother, angry family, and most of all a need for escape. We follow Wallace and Thom as on the cusp of adulthood they reach new levels of independence from their family.

This project seems like a promising idea. Small cast, simple locations, easy coming-of-age conventions.

Battersea

Battersea is an extremely personal project to me as I originally started it during the first lockdown and I was incredibly isolated so creating these characters with these intricate backstories made me feel, in a weird way, somewhat less lonely. Battersea (originally named 'People Like Us') tells the story of four kids who live in the fictional town of Battersea, Oregon in the US. Willem, a quiet teen who struggles with depression and self-harm; Sage, a young trans man who is fighting for acceptance from his parents and eventually settles for a newfound family in Willem and the others; Eli, a young ambitious woman who lost her mother when she was young, forcing her to grow up quickly and finally Morgan, a strong young athlete who while trying to balance college tryouts, keeping perfect grades and a stable mental health is also dealing with the unexpected divorce of her parents.

This project would be a dream to turn into a reality. I think it perfectly encapsulates coming of age and would be quite easy to make a six-page script for, just to get a general idea of the plot. But the large cast and circumstances of the what the actors may need to do is too tall an order for too small a project.

I decided to create a short script treatment for Shameful company as it required the least amount of locations and cast and relies only on somewhat good weather. I pulled up a brief script outline I had been working on for the previous few weeks and started translating the bits I saw most relevant into a script treatment. Baring in mind the outline wasn't finished at the time I was worth me pulling out the beginning and the ending scenes and splurging them together to get the overall them and tone of the production.

The Scripts

R.J.F.S script breakdown

Using this video as a reference we deconstructed the first scene (in my case it was exactly one page) and broke it down it down into niche departments. These can include props, wardrobe, cast, extras all the way to the obscure such as greenery, animal tamers and vehicles.

This is the first page of the script broken down into 6 different departments with each colour representing something different.

This is the breakdown sheet explaining what each note that has been made to the script means in relation to shooting.

Props

WHO CAN BRING WHAT: PROP LIST

This is a prop list that contains all the items that the character(s) interact with within the script. There are certain items which pose more difficulty in getting than others (ie. makeup to an entire fridge).

There were certain things I knew i could bring such as (Cutlery, a few instruments and a watch) but others would pose a higher difficulty due to the obsercurity of it such as ziggy stardust themed drumsticks.

Making set dressing

Drummer Wanted poster

Some props and set dressing had to be created by hand (or technically by keyboard). It was my job to create a DRUMMER WANTED poster and i go to work by creating a drawing up a rough draft of what it might look like in my notepad before transiting it over the CANVA. A graphic design website, where I created the poster and then would later print it off.

This was the first draft of the poster that i created. I drew inspiration from the old black and white posters that would be used to recruit band members.

This is an example of a poster i took plenty of inspiration from. I thought the boldness of the text would bode well with the character of Frankie.

The Director wanted something with colour, which personally I wasn't a fan of. I thought it made more sense to have it in bold black and white however I wasn't going to argue so I made a few adjustments and these were the two drafts I came up with. I thought the bright vibrant colours may be jarring but i think they wouk in their own right. The overall decision was to go with the third (and final) draft.

Shotlist

Shotlist - STICK TO THE BEAT

This is a shot list i drafted up as it helps us achieve a good idea on how the shots will translate from the hypothetical to the physical.

It is often overlooked however it rather beneficial to creating the film as if it is all planned then there's no concern or debate over how something is going to be filmed and framed up on the day. It saved a lot of time and money.
