Nature vs. Nuture
How can the natural world interact with human-created concepts?
Through my sustained investigation, I wanted to show how the natural world can interact with the world humans have developed around it. To me the natural world is all encompassing, and our bodies and the ideas that live in our minds. The human created concepts are the walls that have been put around it. These walls could be metaphorical or literal. In each of my pieces this interaction is highlighted through line. Line is an integral part of all of my pieces because I want the viewer to interpret the difference between nature and constructs. By separating the natural and constructed world with various forms of line this relationship is explored. Sometimes the lines of the constructed world are straight and bold, like in Honey Trails and Self Portrait in Conte. Sometimes they are softer and blend with the natural world like in Tamed River Thames. I don’t want my viewer to think I’m critical of the constructed world, I think it has provided us with many important things, but it needs to be taken with a grain of salt because the natural world is just as important.
