Seeing Double
How do past experiences reflect my current beliefs and values?
Throughout my investigation, I explore what it means to be mixed race growing up in present-day America with a focused perspective of analyzing traditions and beliefs. I include indecisiveness on how others view me, creating my own safe space when no one will fully accept me, and it also embraces my position as a teenager who is figuring out what and what not to think based on the influences around me. Throughout the portfolio, I recreate past experiences to reflect on the things that have stuck with me during the course of my life to challenge my views and beliefs as I continue to grow in a culture pinned against me.
All of my work includes a color that portrays information which could be a feeling or information. I learned how to connect my past experiences with the emotion of color better throughout every piece, and feel that all of them represent a reaction to something. I integrated the meanings of pieces to create multiple paintings to show the detail and thoughts of the individual drawings, paired with the double meaning of the two and three together. Their double meaning helps to shed light on the different perspectives they are viewed from.
