My portfolio was guided by my inquiry questions: How can I show the loss of connection through communication in ceramics? What feelings does this loss bring to someone? As a teenager in the 21st-century, communication through electronics is everywhere. Growing up with this technology, I have become familiar with the inconsistencies that occur. Communication through these electronics can be so difficult to interpret the tone and feeling behind the message. I wanted to bring this to be the main theme of my portfolio because it surrounds my life constantly. My portfolio started with modern technology. As I went on I started to realize that these different inconsistencies in communication do not only come from phone calls and text messages but also from older forms of communication and connection. I also wanted to bring in the idea of misinterpretation when it comes to communication. This is why I have some pieces that do not have a direct correlation to the idea of communication. Most messages can be misinterpreted, such as text messages, or even fortune cookies. I wanted to make sure that I could cover more than just the basic ways of communication. No matter what way you receive a message, there will always be some sort of misinterpretation and confusion. This issue is so prominent in our society today and that is why I wanted to dig deeper and make it my theme for my portfolio.
