Bifurcation: A House Divided
My portfolio was guided by a series of inquiry questions: How can I convey both the tangible and the intangible surrounding my parents separation and the lasting impacts it has had on me? What objects have become most valuable, comforting, or sentimental to me throughout these past years of moving back and forth and how can I give them meaning to a viewer? How can I convey emotions and the energy that comes with processing thoughts and all the moving parts of having two houses in both abstract and realistic ways?
As I worked through my portfolio, I got comfortable being uncomfortable. I practiced previous skills (wheel throwing) and learned new ones like crafting facial features with each piece of my portfolio. Experimentation with color pallets and textures played an integral role in portraying emotions and connecting to the five senses. There were countless revisions as I attempted to replicate important objects in my life as well bring form to abstract concepts. I can draw parallels between my experience creating this portfolio and making adjustments to my day to day life once I had two homes.
