In your first year of the course, you will study the following topics:

We will explain what all of this means when we meet you properly in September, but for now below are some short introductory tasks for you to complete.
What is Sociology and where did it come from?
Task 1: Read the information on the below website and answer the questions that follow.
1. Who 'invented' the term Sociology and what did he want sociology to achieve?
2. At which university was Sociology first taught in Britain?
3. Identify five careers you can pursue with a degree in Sociology.
4. Which are the only two universities in the UK beginning with ‘P’ that teach Sociology.
5. Read the ‘What do Sociologists do?’ page. Which topic on this page do you find the most interesting and why.
Learning sociological language
In some ways, learning sociology is like learning a new language. There are lots of new terms and concepts which you will need to be able to confidently use in all topics throughout the AS/A level Sociology course.
Task 2: Read the ‘What is Sociology?’ document and then complete the following ‘Key concepts’ assignment.
