The BHSA English Department is committed to the ongoing development of our Key Stage 3 curriculum with the aim of creating a challenging and enriching learning experience that draws from a diverse range of sources. This includes some schemes of work that examine ideas, themes and contexts from English literature and language through the lens of media studies, with activities that include critical analysis, classroom discussions and practical tasks.
As part of the Supernatural unit, Year 7 students explore how film makers translate the codes and conventions of Gothic literature to the big screen.
Year 8 students explore how print advertisers use media codes and persuasive language to influence potential buyers. Particular focus is placed on the use of stereotypes in advertising, including their impact and how they can be subverted.
Year 9 students consider how the character of Juliet from Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet is represented across a range of cinematic adaptations, and what these representations suggest about society's changing attitudes toward women and girls.
