Field conditions move Big Spring to Keystone Fieldhouse

By Rylee Garman

On Monday, May 1, 2023, the Bulldogs were set to face Northern both home and away for baseball and softball games. However, due to rainy field conditions, games were moved to Keystone Fieldhouse in Newville, PA.

Keystone Fieldhouse has four turf fields in one location, which allowed all games to be relocated here. This was one of the first times a fan could come to watch all four baseball and softball teams in one place.

The varsity softball team fought a hard game against the Polar Bears but was unable to come away with the win. Even though Northern held a 2-0 lead from the top of the first, the Bulldogs stayed in the game. However, at the top of the fifth inning, Northern hit a home run with two players on bases, which gave them a 5-0 lead. The Bulldogs continued to push, but Northern scored again in the seventh inning. The Lady Bulldogs responded with one run scored in the bottom of the seventh by Katie Elder, but they could not find their stride to catch up to the Polar Bears. The Bulldog softball team lost 6-1.

After beating Northern 7-2 at home the first time, the Bulldog baseball team hoped to succeed against this tough opponent. Right away in the first inning, Brady Singer made his way home and scored for the Bulldogs after Stewart’s single to right field.

Although the Bulldogs came out strong, the Polar Bears returned this energy and scored four runs in the bottom of the first. Northern continued that energy into the second inning where they scored two runs, leaving the inning with a 6-1 lead.

With two outs in the top of the third, Sturm and Singer on bases, Stewart hit a double that allowed Sturm to make it home and score the Bulldogs their second run. The Bulldogs continued to hold off the Polar Bears during the fourth inning but were unable to stop Northern’s stride in the remainder of the game. The game ended in the fifth inning, giving the Bulldogs a 12-2 loss.

Both Big Spring teams will face James Buchanan on Wednesday, May 3. Baseball will be home and softball will be away.

During the top of the fourth, the Bulldogs brought their A-game, only allowing one opposing player onto first. The Bulldogs went into the dugout after a double play.

In the bottom of the fourth, the Bulldogs found their momentum and ran with it. Zoey Zimmerman made it to first after an error by the Bubblers. These plays put the Bulldogs in the lead and only pushed the momentum for the remainder of the inning.

The Bulldogs were able to capitalize off of some errors from Boiling Springs, pushing them to take a 7-3 lead. In this long inning, the Bulldogs made it the whole way through the lineup before getting any outs. Big Spring remained on the offensive even after two outs. Junior high team finishes with an undefeated season

By Rylee Garman

Over the 2022-2023 winter season, Big Spring’s junior high boys basketball team worked together to be successful. The team’s hard work resulted in an undefeated season that came through a daily effort from each team member.

“We, not me.” That is the phrase that united the team in their endeavors. “[The team] embraced the idea of the group being greater than the individual,” said coach Wesley Madden. “That is why we were successful.” Their commitment to growth helped them to achieve their goals. “We challenged them every day to play together. To play as one. To be a team. And they did.”

An impactful game for them was their win at the Steel-High Winterfest Tournament. “[This tournament] is where they realized their potential and started playing exceptional basketball,” said Madden. One member of the team, Landon Sallie, remembered this game as well. “The championship was really fun to win and be a part of,” said Sallie.

The Bulldogs finished their season with a record of 22-0. When the coaches were asked to list any standout players, they mentioned their whole team. “Everyone understood what it took to be successful and was willing to fill their role. Every single player was a stand-out when we needed him,” said Madden. In regards to statistics of the team, the Bulldogs outscored their opponents 897-418 in league games. They also had an average margin of victory of 27 points. “That says everything about us,” Madden said.

Feb. 13, 2023 | Senior Night Win

Lady Bulldogs beat Gettysburg on their senior night

By Rylee Garman

On Tuesday, February 7, the girls basketball team stepped onto their home court for the last time of the 2022-2023 season.

The JV team played first and battled hard against the Warriors. With many turnovers from both teams, and some strong shooters from Gettysburg, the Bulldogs were unable to keep up. The Lady Bulldogs lost 19-37.

Before senior night recognition, the Lady Bulldogs hosted their third youth game of the season in the home gym. That night, four teams from the second-third grade age group stepped onto the court. Spectators, even from the opposing crowd, cheered on the young Bulldogs as they played 3v3 games.

Seniors Diana Kepner and Hannah Werle were recognized with their families before the start of the game. Kepner has played basketball for 13 years, but has been around the sport her entire life and has made countless memories with the team. She reminded underclassmen on the team to keep pushing forward through the hard times. “Do not take one second of being a Bulldog for granted,” said Kepner. “Bulldog country is a very special place, and your time here is shorter than you think.” Kepner plans to continue her education and basketball career at Grove City College.

Werle has played basketball for eight years and has loved forming connections with each of the underclassmen, not only through the game, but through team bonding events. She advises the underclassmen to always stay true to their unique personalities. “Times will get hard and there will be times where you want to give up,” said Werle, “but always lean on each other.”

Next, the varsity Lady Bulldogs stepped onto the court to battle the Warriors. They started off a competitive game, allowing Gettysburg to take the lead 11-13 in the first quarter. However, this energy was matched by the Bulldogs and allowed them to take a close 26-25 lead going into the half. Coming out of the locker rooms, Big Spring took off. They gained a 14 point lead by the end of the third quarter, making the score 44-30. The Lady Bulldogs finished off the game with a final score of 48-32, securing a senior night win against the Warriors.

Big Spring Girls Basketball hosts games for all ages

By Rylee Garman

On Friday, February 3, the Lady Bulldog basketball program took over the gym to face opponent James Buchanan.

First up, the junior high varsity team took to the court. Holding a lead the entire game, and going into the second half holding a 21-3 lead, the Rockets were no match for the Bulldogs. They won the game 32-11.

Next up the junior high JV team faced the Rockets. They lost a hard-fought game 11-43.

In between the junior high and high school basketball games, the program allowed youth members to have the opportunity to enter the court. High school players coached the younger players as two teams of Big Spring youth players versed each other in a 3v3 game. They had the opportunity to run out as their name was announced, just as the varsity girls do.

Shortly after the youth game, the high school JV team entered the court. Facing the Rockets again, the Bulldogs held close with their opponent for the first quarter, but could not keep up. They lost a tough game.

The high school varsity were the final team to face the Rockets. They lost a tough game 32-58 against James Buchanan.

Big Spring pulls off the win on senior night

By Rylee Garman

On Thursday, February 2, the Swimming and Diving team celebrated their senior athletes before a meet against Susquehanna Township.

There were five seniors recognized for the bulldogs - including Julia Chestnut, Nick Egger, Seth Fertig, Ava Lay, and Caleb Stewart.

Chestnut has swam for the past 12 years and will never forget the close bonds she has created with this team. During this meet, she placed first with her team in the Women’s 200 Yard Medley Relay as well as in the Women’s 200 Yard Freestyle Relay. She also placed first in the Women’s 500 Yard Freestyle event with a time of 6:09.15 alongside her sister, Aubrey Chestnut, who placed second with a time of 6:34.57. The advice she offers to underclassmen is to keep putting forth effort. “Always try your best during races,” said Chestnut, “trust the process, and just remember coach knows best when it comes to the lineup.”

Egger placed first in the Men’s 200 Yard Freestyle with a time of 2:04.28, as well as in the Men’s 500 Yard Freestyle. One of his favorite memories is being put in the 500 Yard Freestyle for the first time and realizing he liked the event. After swimming for 12 years, his advice for the team is to “work through the pain because you’ll only get faster by swimming faster.”

Fertig, the only diving senior, placed first for the Men’s 1 Meter Diving with a final score of 243.75. He also placed second in the Men’s 50 Yard Freestyle event. When asked about his advice to underclassmen, Fertig said, “Become a diver so that you can sit in the hot tub and watch the swimmers work hard.”

Lay has been swimming for four years and has loved dying teammates’ hair for districts, going out to eat with the team, and playing mermaids during practice. During the meet, Lay took first place in the Women’s 200 Yard Freestyle with a time of 2:15.00. She also took first place in the Women’s 200 Yard Medley Relay and the Women’s 200 Yard Freestyle relay with her teammates - including fellow senior Julia Chestnut. Lay advises underclassmen to always have fun.  “Keep with the sport no matter how hard it gets,” said Lay, “and as always, trust the process.”

The final senior on the team, Stewart, has also swam for four years. He took first place in the Men’s 50 Yard Freestyle with a time of 24.48 and in the Men’s 100 Yard Butterfly with a time of 1:01.38. To his underclassmen teammates, Stewart said, “You don’t need to breathe, but actually.” His final words of advice to the team were that “fast turns equal fast times, and listen to Coach J.”

Bocce beats Shippensburg on senior night

By Rylee Garman

On Thursday, February 2, the bocce team competed in a home match against Shippensburg. This game also included a celebration of their senior athletes.

The first Big Spring team to step on the court included seniors Abby Bistline and Mikaela Ward. Both seniors wanted to remind the underclassmen that their time in high school will fly by. “Never take a day for granted,” said Bistline. “Before you know it, your high school days will be winding down.” Ward learned the game is more than just a record. “[The sport] is not always about winning or losing but more about the bonds built with others that will last forever,” said Ward.

The beginning of the game started off slow in the first two frames, with the Greyhounds gaining 1 point in frame one and 1 point in frame two. However, this stride by the greyhounds was matched by the bulldogs in frame three, where Big Spring earned 2 points, tying up the game. The bulldogs then sealed the win in the fourth frame by earning 4 points. They also earned 1 point in both the fifth and sixth frame. The comeback brought the Bulldogs to win the game 8-2.

The second team from Big Spring included senior Michael Powell. During his three years in the sport, he enjoyed going to all of the matches. Powell encourages younger members of the team to keep a level. “Celebrate everybody trying their best,” said Powell. “Don’t get discouraged if it doesn’t go the way you want it!”

During the second game, the bulldogs’ second team did not lose the lead the whole game. They started off gaining 2 points in the first frame. While the greyhounds responded with a gain of 1 point during the second frame, the bulldogs quickly took the lead with 4 points earned in the third frame. This helped seal the win for the second team. After the fifth frame, the game ended with a score of 7-3, allowing the bulldogs to earn another win in their home gym.

The bulldog bocce team celebrated their last home match and all of their senior athletes with pizza and cake after the match. Because as Ward said: “Don’t take snack time for granted.”

Female athletes are recognized at a wrestling match

By Rylee Garman

National Women and Girls in Sports Day was celebrated across the country on February 1, 2023. On this day, Big Spring had the opportunity to highlight one of their newest sports available to female athletes. Lady Bulldogs of all ages attended a celebration of the girls wrestlers and themselves.

Before the match, female athletes from all sports and of all ages participated in a Parade of Champions. They all walked around the gym while the names of each of the athletes were announced. This event was put on by We LIFT - a new club to Big Spring High School brought in by Alum and Coach Carly Zinn. The club offered various activities before the match including a photo booth, minute-to-win-it games, and crafts.

Shortly after, senior wrestlers Ava Weibley and Faith Warner were recognized. This year was the second year both of them had wrestled for the Bulldogs. Both Weibley and Warner felt supported by their Big Spring family throughout their time in the program. Warner said: “Do not take one practice, match, tournament, or period for granted because one day it will be your last day wrestling in a bulldog singlet.” Agreeing, Weibley said: “Live in the moment and embrace the opportunity that is placed in front of you.”

In this match, wrestlers in high school, junior high, and youth programs wrestled against Gettysburg. While the Lady Bulldogs were unable to pull out the win as a group, female athletes of all ages were recognized and brought together.

Bulldog teams win close contests

By Rylee Garman

On Tuesday, January 31, the Swimming and Diving teams entered the pool to battle Shippensburg, while the Boys Basketball team worked on the court to beat Northern.

Starting off strong, the Bulldog diver Seth Fertig took first for men’s diving. The boys took this momentum throughout the meet to win almost all of the swimming events as well. On the boys side, Big Spring beat the Greyhounds 103-72.

However, Big Spring’s girls swimmers did not hold a lead for most of the meet. The decider came down to the final event: the Women’s 400 Yard Freestyle Relay. Big Spring’s A team - including Courtney Cherricks, Ava Christopher, Lexi Clouse, and Rebekah Fertig - took first place, allowing the girls team to secure the win. They beat the Greyhounds by only 1 point, winning 90-89.

Meanwhile, Big Spring’s boys and girls basketball teams battled Northern. After losing to the Polar Bears the first time, the Bulldogs looked to make a comeback against them on the home court. They kept up with Northern, ending the first quarter 15-16 and going into halftime 18-21.

Even though the Bulldogs came into the second half down, they had no problem bringing the score back up and exiting the third quarter leading 32-26. As the Polar Bears kept fighting to make a comeback, the Bulldogs brought their energy into the fourth quarter. In the last minute of the game, the Bulldogs led by only 1 point. Finally, with 10.7 seconds left in the game, junior Levi Stewart was fouled. Stewart made both of his foul shots, allowing the Bulldogs to have a 3-point lead against the Polar Bears.

Big Spring secured the win on their home court, 41-38. Junior Jake Knouse was the top scorer for the Bulldogs with 16 total points.

Female athletes of all ages are recognized

By Rylee Garman

Tonight, Big Spring will be hosting events to honor female athletes. At the first wrestling match solely for the girls held in the high school gym, there will be a time to honor the seniors and female athletes of all ages.

The two senior wrestlers recognized tonight are Faith Warner and Ava Weibley. Both of them were asked to reflect on their time in the sport and how it has impacted them.

Warner has appreciated the support she’s received from the program. “We have a great group of coaches who dedicate a lot of time to us,” said Warner. “This team is more like a family than I could ever ask for. I really appreciate knowing I have a good support system.” Her favorite memory from her time on the team was when she got her first pin in a boys varsity match against James Buchanan. “[Seeing] how excited the community got is a moment I will never forget,” said Warner.

Weibley loves the sport and feels like wrestling has taught her a lot. “It’s taught me mental toughness, which is how you win matches,” said Weibley. “The team feels like my family. I feel like having such a great support system is what makes me want to come and want to do better.” The most memorable moment from her senior year was their match against Boiling Springs. “They are our rivals and we’ve never wrestled them before. The energy was through the roof.”

Warner’s reminds younger members of the team, “You stand a chance with every single person you walk out on the mat with. Don’t lose confidence. You’re gonna win, you’re gonna lose. It’s just about what you can do in the next match or the next period that will make a difference.”

Weibley’s advice for younger members of the program is to not give up. “If it’s want you want, get it. Mental toughness is what's gonna get you there.”

Before tonight’s match, there will be a Parade of Champions to recognize all female athletes. Lady bulldogs athletes are encouraged to join We LIFT club as they host this event. Female athletes will meet in the cafeteria between 6:30-6:45pm dressed in their maroon and gold.

After the Parade of Champions, come to honor the girls wrestling seniors and watch the entire team battle Gettysburg.

Senior Wrestlers reflect on their time in the sport

By Rylee Garman

Tonight, on January 26, 2023, the boys wrestling team will be having their senior night. To reminisce on their time in the program, they were asked a few questions to reflect upon how the Big Spring Wrestling Program has impacted them.

How has the Big Spring Wrestling program impacted you?

Clayton Hetrick: “[The program has] pushed me out of my comfort zone and allowed me to grow as an individual.”

Rodney Reed: “[Wrestling] teaches you to not quit when things get low. It doesn’t define you as a person. You learn a lot from wrestling.”

Jay Roberds: “Wrestling is one of those sports where you can learn a lot of life lessons and build up mental toughness for everything you go through in life. Not just on the mat, but in other sports, in the classroom, and in life in general.”

The senior wrestlers were also asked what advice they would give to younger members of the program.

Hetrick’s best advice for younger members of the program is to recognize it will be tough - especially during your first two years of high school. Hetrick said, “The first two years will pay off for the second two by ten times as much. Once you start trusting the process and getting your time in, it will all come together a lot faster than you anticipated.”

Reed felt like he learned a lot from wrestling and all that comes with it. His best advice is to recognize that one must “adapt to adversity.” This is applicable to all areas of life.

Roberds’ best advice is that “no matter who you are, just trust the process. There’s nothing more you can do than that.” He also mentioned the short time one has in high school sports. “Keep pushing and keep trying because you only get so many years to do this,” said Roberds. “But once it’s gone you can never go back, so just love it all.”

The seniors will be recognized before their match against Greencastle tonight at 7:15 pm.

Big Spring holds its first girls wrestling duals tournament

By Rylee Garman

On Saturday, January 21, the girls wrestling teams from Big Spring, Carlisle, Boiling Springs, and Governor Mifflin took to the mats for the first-ever girls duals held at Big Spring.

Senior Faith Warner wrestled after being out due to injury. She aided each of the team wins by pinning her opponents in all three of her matches. Warner said: “When I woke up for this tournament, compared to any other, I was so excited to know we would be coming to our home gym with our home crowd.”

The girls enjoyed having a home event solely for them. Junior wrestler Sarah Lynn found excitement in wrestling in front of home fans. Lynn said: “We always go to other places. It feels so much better in your home gym.” Coach Greg Warner agreed and said, “Our girls program is really growing. It’s really great to get them out here in front of their own fans.”

As of now, there are 93 high schools in Pennsylvania that have sanctioned a girls wrestling program within their school district. This means that only seven more schools are needed to reach the 100 required schools for girls wrestling to be sanctioned in Pennsylvania. Lily Raudabaugh, a seventh grade wrestler for the Bulldogs, is excited for the future of girls wrestling. Raudabaugh said: “We’re not going to be just wrestling boys. We’ll do our own thing.”

Ava Weibley, another senior on the team, felt this event is a milestone for the sport. Weibley said: “[The duals tournament] feels like a big achievement, not just for our school, but for girls’ wrestling in general. It’s not sanctioned yet and we are already starting to have home events.” Weibley went 3-0 for the day, winning all of her matches.

The lady bulldog wrestlers finished the day going 3-0 as a team. They beat Governor Mifflin (54-27), Carlisle (36-18), and Boiling Springs (82-9).
